Basics
You can play Rainbow Islands alone, or taking turns with another player. Your objective is to proceed vertically through the zones of each Rainbow Island, collecting bonus items and using your rainbow magic to battle enemies on the way. Your objective is to clear the Rainbow Islands of the invaders and defeat the final boss on the last island. There are seven levels to complete, each with four zones.
Controls
Use the direction keys to move your character left and right, pressing the buttons to jump to higher ledges and create rainbows. These rainbows serve many purposes: weapon, climbing tool, trampoline, bridge and long-range object grabber. You can walk right over your rainbows, or jump on top of one to shatter it. If you hold the jump key down, you’ll bounce on a rainbow without breaking it. Rainbows remain on the screen for a short time and then disappear.
Items
Rainbow Islands has more than fifty types of items to collect, scattered around the zones and dropped by defeated enemies. Fruit and other goodies score bonus points, while special items will give you an advantage for a short time. Such pickups can increase your rainbow power, boost your speed, allow you to fly and more.
Enemies and Bosses
Rainbows will defeat enemies by hitting them directly or falling on them when shattered. If an enemy touches you, you lose one of your three lives. Lose all three and the game is over. On the last zone of each island, you'll face a boss creature -- these take more pummeling with rainbow magic than their run-of-the-mill flunkies, but they go down eventually.
Tip: Here Comes The Flood
You have limited time to complete each zone. If you take too long moving upward, you'll get a warning, then the level will fill with water.
Tip: Treasure
At the end of each zone, a treasure chest sprays out a bunch of bonus items. Stand at one end of the screen, wait for the shower to finish, then run straight for the opposite end -- this guarantees you'll get everything.
Tip: Climbing
In some cases, one rainbow isn't enough. You can make a rainbow staircase by holding the jump button to bounce on one rainbow while you make another. The rainbows aren't that sturdy, but they'll stop one hit. Don't hesitate to take cover under a rainbow if you're getting bombarded.
