Controls
Rainbow Six Vegas is a tactical squad-based shooter that can be played with either the mouse or a controller. By default, movement is controlled with the WSAD keys. To fire your weapon, use the left mouse button. To zoom, use the center mouse button. The right mouse button is used to take cover, but you will only stay in cover as long as the button is held. The map is accessed with the Tab key, and Space serves as an all-purpose Action key that allows you to interact with objects as well as give your squad orders.
Squad
There may be a lot of terrorists out there, but you also have two allies to help you. You don't control your squadmates directly, but you can give them certain orders. To order your squad to move, just look at the area you want them to move to and hit the spacebar. If you order them to move to an object such as a door or a rope, they will move and then you will be given a choice of actions that they could perform. You can also change how your squad reacts to enemies by changing the Rules of Engagement. In Assault mode, the squad will fire at will, but in Infiltrate mode, they will automatically equip silencers and shoot only in defense. If one of your squadmates falls in combat in the first mission, it will end your mission. In later missions, you will be able to heal them either by moving to them yourself or by ordering the other squad member to do so. Just be quick about it, as they can still die if you take too long.
Tip: Tactics
Though Rainbow Six Vegas is more action-oriented than some other tactical shooters, it's still by no means a run-and-gun. If you bust into a room guns blazing, you're likely to get yourself, your squadmates, or hostages killed. Instead, move slowly, get the lay of the land, and position your squad to attack from multiple angles. In dark or smoky areas, try using either your thermal vision or night vision goggles. For doors, make sure to use your snake cam to assess the situation. Remember that you can order your squad to get in place around a door for quick entry and clearing. You can also tag enemies with the T key as priority targets to take out the most threatening terrorists first.
Weapons
Your weapon loadout consists of three types of weapons: two large weapons, one pistol, and 2 gadgets. Large weapons range from submachine guns to shotguns to assault rifles. Your gadget options include a variety of grenades such as flag, flashbang, and smoke, or if you want a bigger bang, C4 and breaching charges. Though you will be provided with a default set, you have dozens of weapons to choose from. You can change your weapons at the beginning of missions, or whenever you run across green Equipment crates in the field. These crates will also allow you to restock your ammo and grenade supply. You can also pick up weapons dropped by your enemies by hitting the E key.
Tip: Cover
Even on the Normal difficulty setting, you can only take a very small number of bullets before dying, so staying low and behind cover is critical to your success. Luckily, anything from corners to slot machines can be used to provide cover, so it's usually pretty easy to stay hidden. Cover will also let you duck back and give you time to recover your health if you have been shot.
