Getting Started
To begin, press the one player start button. Rastan will appear on the left side of the screen. Without delay, fearsome monsters will make their entrance from the other side to face our hero in combat. Press left and right to move the mighty Rastan, using the attack button to strike the approaching beasts with your sword. Be on guard -- contact with these creatures robs our hero of his health...and ultimately, his life!
Additional Controls
Rastan will soon find rough terrain, which he must navigate to proceed. Press the jump button, along with either left or right, to leap over hills and onto nearby platforms. Rastan can also climb stationary ropes...just press up while standing near them, then press up or down to climb. To swing from moving ropes, simply jump toward them. Rastan will automatically grab hold of the vine and swing until the jump button is pressed to let go.
Items
While on his quest, Rastan will find helpful items. These include flasks of medicine, protective clothing, glimmering jewels, and a small selection of alternate weapons. The medicine flasks will restore some of Rastan's life, but beware the bubbling flasks of poison which sap his strength! Shields and clothing protect Rastan from injury, while jewels increase your score. Finally, the weapons range from powerful axes to an enchanted, fire-spitting blade.
Tip: Downthrust
Rastan can perform a downward sword thrust, useful for vanquishing foes beneath him and for opening secret passageways. To perform it, press the jump button, then press down and push the attack button.
Tip: Upthrust
To collect weapons, you must stab them with your sword. If you can't seem to reach a weapon hanging in mid-air, jump underneath it, then press up and the attack button to stab upward.
Tip: Bats
Patience may be a virtue elsewhere, but in the world of Rastan, it's a fatal mistake. Wait too long to finish a stage and a flock of starving bats will come from all corners of the screen, hoping to sink their teeth into your flesh.
