Characters
Each character has 5 different attributes: Status, Control, Charisma, Presence, and Resolve. Each action is attached to one or more of these attributes. Using a character with low attributes on an action is more likely to result in failure. Resolve is a little different from the others, and is the measure of the character's commitment to the faction. If this falls too low, the character may leave that faction. If your character is successful in enough actions, he will be ready for promotion, which will show as a star on the character's portrait. Click this star to improve the character¿s attributes and choose actions. Sometimes, you will be able to improve your character's ability at an existing action, and sometimes you will be able to choose a new action for that character to learn.
Tip: Speed Things Up
Republic runs in semi-real time, with each game day lasting 12 minutes. It can be useful to run at this speed to see all the actions of your opponents as they occur. But if you want to speed up the pace, you can click the plus sign next to the clock to increase the speed up to 5X. The game will slow back down again if you leave the map or if you mouse over a menu.
Resources
There are three types of resources in Republic: force, influence, and wealth. At the beginning of the game, you will begin with 300 each. To gain more, you will need to gather support in the districts of the city. Each district has a colored bar with a number that will show you the number and type of the resource you will gain from it, and a pie chart that will show the support of the various factions. You will gain resources at the beginning of each day based on your support in all districts. To gain support, you will need to perform actions in that district that boost your profile. However, be aware that you can only win over neutral people, marked in gray. If an opposing faction has too much control of the district, you will need to knock them down a peg or two before you can move in yourself. But remember, they'll be trying to do the same to you in the factions you already have, so keep an eye on all your support over time.
Tip: Secrecy
Each location has a secrecy rating, and you will want to pay attention to them before choosing where to perform an action. For positive actions, such as trying to gain support, you will want to choose a location with very low secrecy to make sure that everyone sees you. For negative actions, you will want to make sure to choose somewhere more secret to keep your involvement quiet.
Actions
The primary method of interacting with the world in Republic is by performing actions. To perform an action, first click on the character that you wish to use in the lower left corner of the screen. The actions that character knows will be listed, and you can choose one. Be aware that you will need the appropriate number of resources to perform an action. Though actions may have different names and resource needs based on the character, the goals fall into a few categories: gathering information, recruiting new characters to your faction, gaining support, weakening an opponent's support, and so on. Your character can perform 3 actions a day, while your allies will sleep for part of the day and can only perform 2 actions.
Tip: Conversation
Some actions, such as trying to convince someone to join your faction, can be handled directly using conversation. To use conversation, wait for your character to begin the action, then click on the character to zoom in. After a few seconds, the conversation will begin. Your character will have 4 conversation icons that you can allocate points to. Once allocated, you will be able to choose which icon to use. Your icon will be compared to the other person's, and the one with the higher point total wins the round. You will gain 5 points for the first round, 10 for the second, and so on. After the fourth round, the game starts over, but you will now know what icons your opponent has and can plan accordingly. The game ends after the second set of 4 rounds. If you choose not to engage in the conversation, don't worry, the computer will handle this for you.
Getting Started
When the title screen appears, use the mouse to set the cursor on New Game, then click the left mouse button. You'll then be asked to enter the name of your avatar and his faction -- just click inside each text window and type in the names you'd like to use. To use the tutorial, check the box next to "Is this your first game of Republic?" Next, you will be given a series of 10 personality questions. The answers to these questions will help determine your character's attributes and ideology.
Ideology
Ideology is the measure of how strongly a person, district, or faction feels about the three resource types. Ideology affects how people will respond to your faction or actions. For example, if you try to recruit a person with a very different ideology from your faction, you will have a harder time convincing them to join. Moreover, a character in your faction will lose Resolve over time if they do not match the faction ideology. For actions, if you wish to be successful in a district that favors wealth, you will be better off using a wealth-based action. Your faction's ideology is based on your personality quiz to begin with, but will change based on your actions over the course of the game.
