Basics
Return to Mysterious Island is a spiritual sequel to the famous Jules Verne novel called (wait for it) The Mysterious Island. Mina, the character you play, is not so much returning to Mysterious Island as she is visiting for the first time, having been shipwrecked and washed ashore there. Your objective is to help her find a way off and solve the mystery of the place. This puzzle-based adventure is full of challenges and steeped in Verneian mythology involving the fate of Captain Nemo.
Controls
This is point-and-click adventure game challenges you with complex puzzles and requires a lot of exploration and experimentation. Control Mina with the mouse -- "look around" by moving the mouse and note how the cursor changes to context-sensitive icons when you mouse over an object you can grab or interact with or a direction you can go. Left-clicking performs the action, while a right-click will bring up Mina's inventory so you can combine or manipulate items she's collected on her travels.
Puzzle Solving
Mina's progress depends on your ability to solve some very challenging puzzles. Exploration and experimentation, plus a good helping of logic, are what's required to complete the game. Most puzzles involve using or combining inventory items to create some tool or object to help you. If one solution doesn't work, just try something different. There are usually multiple approaches to solving most puzzles, and it's not necessary to solve them all in order to finish the game.
Scoring
As you move through the story, you score points based on the cleverness of your solutions and how many optional puzzles you've finished successfully. There is no minimum score required to win; victory is dependent on your ability to get to the end and then solve the final mysteries that await. Fans of the adventure genre, however, might like to return to this mysterious island even after they've won, to try for more points, solve puzzles in new ways, or finish some of the ones they skipped.
Tip: Of Monkeys and Men
Mina befriends a surprisingly intelligent monkey named Jep shortly after she's shipwrecked. This little guy is an important part of the story and can help you with many puzzles.
Tip: Inventory
As with most point-and-click adventures, nearly every item in the game is useful at some point or another. Search every screen carefully and collect all the items you find.
Tip: Step One
Mina's first few tasks deal with the practicalities of surviving on a strange island. Try to get a fire going, see if you can find or catch some food, and make yourself some basic tools that will come in handy later.
Tip: Look Carefully
There's at least one thing to pick up in almost every part of the island, but sometimes these objects can be hard to see. Search each locale very carefully to make sure you don't miss anything.
