Basics

You are G.I. Rogue, one of the elite Genetic Infantry made by the Southers to win the war for Nu-Earth. Your genetic engineering has made you singularly capable to exist in the now-toxic atmosphere of the planet, your training has made you a deadly combatant, and a cybernetic bio-chip installed in your brain makes it possible -- should you fall in combat -- to dump everything you know in a new body and continue fighting. Ready to win this war, solider?

Controls

While the controls of Rogue Trooper aren’t especially complex -- it’s a third-person action-adventure where your commands mostly boil down to “run” and “shoot” -- the first stage of the game is a tutorial that will help you learn the ropes. Pay attention to the commands onscreen after the initial cutscene, and the game will hold your hand until you’re ready to stand on your own feet.

Biochips

All of the G.I. have biochips installed in their brains. But after the first level, Rogue will be the only one left with a body! His allies live on through some of Rogue’s equipment, though: Gunnar is a heavy-weapons expert, and Rogue has installed him onto his gun. Bagman manages supplies, so he’s on your backpack. And Helm is an Intel-Ops specialist, living on in Rogue’s helmet. These are the only allies you have in a brutal one-sided war, so take their advice to heart!

Tips: Reuse, Recycle

Whenever you defeat an enemy or uncover a hidden Scav pile, you’ll find scrap to salvage. Take it! Salvage is as good as gold in Rogue Trooper, and Bagman can keep things organized until you can trade in your salvage for new weapons or upgrade the weapons you’ve got already.

Tip: Extra Salvage

If you can sneak up on an enemy and perform a Kill Move -- anything from a simple neck-snap to strangling him with his own breathing apparatus -- you’ll earn more salvage for keeping his body mostly intact than you would by shooting him full of holes. Keep an eye on your radar for those Scav piles, too.

Tip: Souther Soldiers

While you’re the only remaining G.I., there are other, regular Souther soldiers who will appear to help you every once in a while. Unfortunately, they lack both your fortitude and your training, and rarely last very long against the enemy. If they’re going to make it out of any battles alive, it’ll be because you save their sorry butts, not their own combat expertise.
