Basics
Sacred Gold is the ultimate compilation for the real-time fantasy RPG, including both the original game and the enormous Underworld expansion pack for high-level characters. Offering over 100 hours on nonlinear, combat-intensive gameplay, Sacred has drawn favorable comparisons to classics such as Diablo and Dungeon Siege. Follow the high-fantasy storyline or explore the world on your own, doing good (and evil), all in the name of adventure, huge piles of loot, and the killing of scary monsters.
Controls
Sacred provides an overhead, isometric view of the action, allowing you to see your character and his or her immediate surroundings at various zoom levels. Begin by choosing one of eight character classes, and get ready for adventure. The opening section of the game is also a tutorial that will introduce the basics of movement, combat, character control, and inventory management. If you've played games such as Diablo, Titan Quest or Loki, Sacred should be immediately familiar to you.
Character Types
The original Sacred featured six character classes, and the Underworld expansion adds two more. You'll see common fantasy archetypes like Wood Elves and Dwarven Warriors, along with more unusual options, such as the shape-shifting Daemoness and the noble Seraphim. Each class has skills unique to them, along with a general pool of shared stats that every class can access. Choosing and customizing your character will really dictate how you play Sacred Gold, so you may want to try a few.
Questing
One of Sacred Gold's most popular features is its nonlinearity. Unlike many other fantasy RPGs that may claim to be open-ended, in Sacred you really can go where you want, when you want, and do what you want when you get there. Literally hundreds of side quests -- some simple, some complicated -- can be found throughout the game alongside the main story arc. It's in your best interest to seek these quests out and take them, to gain better loot and level your character for the dangers ahead.
Combat
The world of Ancaria is inundated, overrun, flooded, teeming with monsters. Outside the relative safety of towns, you can't swing a cat without hitting a monster. In fact, it's probably a monster cat. On one hand, this is great, because by killing monsters you'll collect experience and treasure. On the other, it's dangerous, because...well, they don't call them "monsters" for nothing. The combat in Sacred is all about nearly-constant, large-scale fights, so buff up your combat skills early.
Tip: Looking for Loot
Hold down the Alt key to highlight all treasure dropped by monsters and hidden throughout the landscape. It can be hard to see otherwise!
Tip: Best Friends Forever
Throughout your adventures in Sacred Gold, you'll encounter characters who'll tag along with you. You can wind up with quite an entourage if you're well-liked, and though you can't control these characters directly, they'll use their skills to your advantage.
Tip: Super Combo!
You can group several different (or identical) attacks and hotkey them to unleash multiple-hit combos on your enemies. One trick is to stack a spell that reduces an enemy's defense, then a big attack, followed up by something that'll make their retaliation less painful.
Tip: Socket to Me
Many weapons and magical items -- particularly those found in the Underworld portion of the game -- offer upgrade sockets. Have a town blacksmith fit special artifacts into these slots to unlock even greater power in each item.
Tip: I'm Runed! Runed!
Seek out magical runes scattered throughout the game world. You use these to increase the power level of certain spells and skills -- find enough of the right type of rune, and the talent will level up, becoming that much more effective.
