Basics
The objective of School Tycoon is to build and manage the best school you can on a limited budget. An open-ended "sandbox" mode is available, along with a series of increasingly challenging scenarios. Though this is a pretty straightforward game to learn, you can get ahead by taking the included tutorial. It helps, but in this game experimentation is really the best way to figure things out. This is a fun and friendly game perfect for younger players and surprisingly enjoyable for older ones.
Placing Objects
You literally begin with nothing -- no school at all. That won't attract many students, so you want to place some academic buildings or rooms as quickly as possible. Cost is a factor here: the more you spend, the better students will learn or the more effective the facility will be. Sometimes locked items become available as you continue to play. You can rotate items by clicking the right mouse button, and place or move them with the left. Click on a building to see its vital stats.
Staffing
And, of course, you're not much of a school without teachers. The staffing button allows you access to teachers, coaches, landscapers -- all the people you need to staff your school. Just click the appropriate employee type and drop them where they go: in the janitorial office for janitors, in a classroom for teachers and so on. Look at teacher ratings, and try to strike a balance between fun, strictness and skill to keep everyone happy.
Information
You can click on just about any object to learn more about it. The information tab appears just above the main interface on the lower right side of the screen. Click students, buildings and even placed objects like trees to get additional information on their condition. The tabs along the top keep your data organized. You can also move and sell facilities using this tab. The school newspaper is another source of information -- it gives you a basic rundown of the week's events.
Tip: Disasters
Sometimes bad things happen -- be on the lookout for tornadoes and similar catastrophes. It helps to have enough money in the budget to rebuild; if you wait too long, students may leave the school.
Tip: Niceties
Students like cool schools, so be sure to place parks, fountains, trees and other attractive objects where you can. The nicer the place looks, the happier they'll be.
Tip: Commands
You don't have much direct control over your students, but you can give them basic orders. Just click an individual student and click the orders button in the information tab.
Tip: Clean Up!
Finally, don’t skimp on your maintenance staff. Janitors and maintenance workers keep things clean and in working order, which is important for student satisfaction. Remember, you have to hire these guys and place them in their buildings!
Tip: Organization
The secret to an effective school is efficiency. Keep academics, sports and other facilities grouped logically, so it's easy to move from activity to activity.
