Basics
Secrets of Great Art is a puzzle game in which you play a nameless individual stuck in a strange world -- unable to move, you change locations almost like you're in a dream. Each place you visit contains a painting, within which many mundane objects have been cunningly hidden. You must find each one before the time runs out. In other puzzles, you're tasked with pointing out subtle differences in apparently identical works. Be warned -- this game is harder by far than it sounds.
Controls
Secrets of Great Art is a mouse-driven game -- each time you're presented with a painting, just mouse around it and left-click on items you find. Note the item list on the left: these items -- and only these -- are clickable. It doesn't matter if you find maracas, a tulip and a ham in a famous painting unless those items are on the list. As you knock items off the list, new ones appear...sooner or later you'll be able to click that ham.
Strategies
This game calls for patience and a very relaxed eye. Some objects are immediately distinguishable, just as some differences are immediately visible when you're comparing paintings. Some, however, are hidden in plain sight to such a degree that you'll smack your forehead for missing them. Look at each painting carefully: first take in the whole thing, then begin hunting around every inch. Watch for optical illusions, color variations, and anything that seems out of place.
Tip: Hint Me
You can click the Get A Hint button only three times during each puzzle, so save your hints until you're totally and completely stumped.
Tip: Colors and Lines
When you're hunting out differences in apparently identical paintings, pay close attention to borders -- things like the hem of a dress or the line of an archway. Also be sure to compare the colors of things that otherwise seem the same in each painting.
Tip: The Storyline
As you progress through the game, the peculiar mystery of your adventure unfolds through diary-like notes and remembrances from the main character. Each successfully completed puzzle offers another tantalizing hint at the big picture.
