Gameplay Modes
After selecting a league, you have another menu. The Friendly game option is a single match. Cup and League matches are each a tournament-style series of games. Once you've made your selection, you're prompted to choose a team and the pitch type, or playing field. When selecting a team, make sure your team is highlighted in blue! Red teams are computer-controlled. Click "Play Match" to select your starting formation.
Leagues
At the title screen, you're prompted to select between National Teams, Club Teams, or Custom Teams. National Teams represent an entire country: Britain, Germany, Latvia, and so on. Club Teams represent individual cities or private organizations. Custom Teams are just silly. But with regards to the individual leagues, there isn't a whole lot of difference.
Goals
The point of the game is to get the ball into the opposing team's goal without letting them get the ball into yours. While real life challenges players by disallowing them from touching the ball with their hands, your players in Sensible Soccer will handle that themselves. Just run, pass, and shoot to score points! The game is split into two halves; whoever has the highest score at the end of the second half wins the match.
Formations
Before the game starts, you're prompted to choose a formation of players. This controls how your players are arranged on the field. The numbered arrangements indicate the number of players in each position counting from your goal to the other side of the field, so the 5-3-2 formation has five defenders near the goal, three midfielders, and two forwards on the other side of the field. Good offensive formations are Attack, 4-3-3, and 3-5-2. Good defensive formations are Defend, 4-4-2, and 5-4-1.
Controls
You control the player nearest the ball, with the number above his head. Use the directional controls to move around the field. When playing offense, press the Shoot button to kick the ball towards the goal. Press the Pass button to pass the ball to a nearby player. Press the Kick button to simply punt the ball. Defense is even easier: run into another player to steal the ball, or press Shoot, Pass, or Kick to slide tackle. Try to get somewhat close before tackling to avoid fouling.
Dead Balls
At the beginning of a game, after a foul, or during a penalty kick, the ball is considered "dead". If your team is kicking off, choose a direction to kick and press any button to begin play. Alternately, press either left three times or right three times to take control of the coach to change your team formation or make a player substitution.
Tip: Good Teams
If you're having trouble choosing a team from the myriad options available, some of the best teams all-around are Germany (National), Holland (National), AC Milan (Club), and Sensible XI (Custom).
Tip: Field Types
When selecting pitch types, Normal, Hard and Dry lend themselves to high bounces and long kicks. Muddy, Wet and Soft fields slow the ball down as it bounces. Icy fields have low bounces, but long rolling stops. Random, of course, chooses any one of the other fields for your match.
Tip: Ball Control
Keep moving! The players are kicking the ball as they run, and if they stop running, the ball rolls away, out of their possession. Keep moving to control the ball, and pass to another player if things get hairy.
