Goals

As in the earlier games, Sam will face huge swarms of enemies as he travels from world to world hunting for medallion pieces. Mental's army is ridiculously huge, and he's more than happy to throw everything he's got at Sam. The good news is that the medallion pieces are hidden on planets Mental has been oppressing for years, so there's a chance that some of the locals will help Sam out. They may even fight alongside you! Once you've got all five pieces, you can finally confront Mental himself.

Controls

If you've played the original Serious Sam games (or any other first person shooter, for that matter), you already know what you need to in order to play Serious Sam II. The default controls call for keyboard and mouse play, but you can customize the controls however you want in the game options menu. Take advantage of the first mission to get the hang of moving Sam around, switching between your weapons and firing at enemies.

NETRICSA

NETRICSA, the artificial intelligence system implanted in Sam's skull, is back with some upgrades in Serious Sam II. She's definitely the brains of the operation, and it's her job to analyze tactical situations and provide advice on how to proceed. She'll also reveal weak spots in new monsters, give you a rundown on any weapons you find, and tally up your score at the end of each mission. If you're stuck somewhere or don't know where to go, check with NETRICSA for advice.

Vehicles and Weapons

Serious Sam II includes some vehicles that you can take into battle with you. Whenever you find one of these craft lying around, hop in right away -- it usually means that a horde of enemies even more numerous than the typical onslaughts is lurking around the corner. When not in vehicles, Sam blasts Mental's minions with an all-new collection of weapons. Keep your eyes open for new weapons, and check with NETRICSA to compare enemy vulnerabilities to your armaments.

Getting Started

In Serious Sam II, your objective is to guide "Serious" Sam Stone through five different worlds, spitting hails of bullets at armies of foes, to collect the medallion pieces necessary to render the evil Mental vulnerable to attack. This is a high-octane first person shooter with a seriously silly sense of humor and some of the weirdest enemies you'll ever see. Can Sam finally defeat Mental and save the universe? It's a serious challenge, and only Serious Sam can meet it.

Tip: Parrot Bombs

Sometimes, if you want to make an omelette, you have to blow up a few parrots. These handy parrot bombs act like guided missiles -- the parrot will fly toward its intended target and chase it down before detonating. It's bad for the parrot, but very useful to Sam.

Tip: Turrets

In addition to vehicles, you'll also find the occasional stationary gun turret. These are especially useful when Sam is being attacked from the air. Watch your ammo, though, and hop out when the turret's health gets low.

Tip: Secrets

There are multiple secret areas scattered through each mission. Some are just goofy jokes, while others contain ammo pickups, new weapons and items to increase your score. Most secrets aren't very hard to find -- you just need to poke around a bit.

Tip: Grenades

Sam also packs grenades, which are very useful for breaking up clumps of enemies and doing major damage to larger foes. They're most effective in tight hallways.
