Getting Started
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter is a high-adrenaline first person shooter with a goofball sense of humor and more action than you can wave a shotgun at. As "Serious" Sam Stone, your objective is simple: travel through time to ancient Egypt and blast every single minion of Mental that you see. And you'll be seeing a lot of them. Good thing you brought a lot of bullets. Now go save the world!
Controls
Serious Sam plays like any first person shooter. You move Sam with the WASD keys and aim with the mouse. You're free to customize the controls however you want from the options menu, but most players find that the defaults are the easiest to work with. You can also refer to the manual from the game's main menu, but Serious Sam is so straightforward that you're not likely to need it. The first few levels are intentionally easier so you can get the hang of the controls without being swarmed.
The Second Encounter
Sam hops a spaceship at the end of the First Encounter, hoping to commandeer it and finally track Mental down and destroy him. Unfortunately things don't work out, and the ship crashes in South America. You're still stuck in the past (the Second Encounter starts about nine seconds after the First ends), still hounded by Mental's forces, and still very, very serious. If it ain't broke, don't fix it -- check with NETRICSA for your objectives and get moving.
Gameplay
Serious Sam's claim to fame is the enormity of its battles. You will face hordes of enemies --dozens. Hundreds. Sometimes more. They would actually have to invent a new number to accurately describe the enemy count, making Serious Sam one of the most intense, overwhelming and frenetic action games ever. Aside from that, the game plays pretty much exactly like any first person shooter, and you'll have no trouble getting right into the swing of things.
NETRICSA
Sam is not too bright. His gifts lie elsewhere. Fortunately, he's outfitted with the newest in artificial intelligence implants: a little tiny thinking computer that does the work his own brain is not suited for. NETRICSA manages objectives, keeps track of things you ought to remember and provides advice. Trust her (yes, NETRICSA is a girl); this is one voice in your head that you should listen to. Invoke NETRICSA whenever you need to review your objectives or get info on a strange new monster.
Tip: NETRICSA's Analysis
In addition to her running commentary on Sam's activities, NETRICSA will provide analyses of game challenges, monsters, weapons and more. Her wisdom can help make the game a lot easier, so make a point to check with her whenever you get stuck.
Tip: Bowling for Monsters
The SBC Cannon is an unusual weapon, and absolutely indispensable against the hordes you'll face. It fires a big cannonball that rolls through enemies, and is best when used against large groups that are compacted into a tight space. You can mow down dozens of foes with a single well-placed shot.
Tip: Secrets
Serious Sam is stuffed with hidden secrets, and savvy players will make a point to find all they can. Check areas that are off the beaten path or seem out of the ordinary. You may find better weapons, ammo caches and much more.
Tip: Ammunition
Because there are so many monsters in the game, ammo conservation is a major issue. You can easily go through several hundred rounds in a single encounter, so always watch for ammo pickups and don't fire unless you have a shot. You can also take advantage of Sam's pistols, which require no ammo but don't do much damage.
Tip: The Serious Bomb
Grab the Serious Bomb to kill every monster on the screen. This can be very helpful when you're totally surrounded, so don't use the Bomb unless you really need to. "Kill every monster on the screen" really just means "get a two-second rest before another horde shows up."
