Basics

If you played the original Shadowgrounds, then you know what to expect from the sequel: Survivor is a brutal, fast-paced shoot 'em up played from a top-down perspective. You jump back and forth between three main characters, each with their own skills and weapons specialties. Whatever these aliens want, it's your job to stop them. Explore the shattered colony and its outskirts, upgrade your weapons and capabilities, save other survivors...and teach these aliens not to mess with humanity.

Controls

Control your survivor with the WASD keys to move around. Move the mouse cursor to place the targeting reticule over foes and objects, then just click or hold the left and right buttons for primary and alternate fire. By default, your action key is E, while the Enter key brings up your character and weapons screen. You can customize controls in the game options menu, and if you're new to the game it's helpful to leave the tutorial text on during your first play.

Characters

Each of the three playable characters has their own storyline, and you jump between them throughout the game. Luke Giffords is a tough marine who specializes in rifles and rockets; aging technician Bruno Lastmann knows his way around flamethrowers and shotguns; and finally Isabel Larose is as close as Survivor comes to finesse, given her skill with railguns and plasma rifles. You can spend experience points and powerups to improve each of these characters and their weapons as you play.

Upgrades

Survivor starts out pretty easy, but it gets a lot harder over time. The key to your success is judicious use of upgrades, managed through your character screen. You gain personal experience points and levels by successfully completing missions and blasting alien scum: use the points you gain to buy special character abilities like greater stamina. Rummage through supply crates and check dead aliens' pockets for tools to upgrade your weapons, increasing damage, range, and potency.

Tip: Supply & Demand

Supply crates are scattered throughout New Atlantis, but aren't as common as you'd probably like. Open them up with the use key (default: E) to find ammunition, medpacks and other helpful goodies. The rest you'll have to find just laying around, or by picking through disgusting alien corpses.

Tip: Kaboom

Survivor adds very robust physics to the gameplay. Objects fall, roll and move realistically, and many things will explode violently if shot. Once you're used to the physics, you can use regular junk and gas-filled barrels as booby traps against your enemies.

Tip: Flashlight is your Friend

Each of your characters comes with a flashlight (default key: F). This tool is indispensible in the dark corridors of New Atlantis. Luckily, the flashlight battery never runs out, and you don't have to worry about being sneaky -- all the aliens will attack you no matter what. So shine that light!

Tip: Aiming is Complicated

You may find that you don't always hit things just because your targeting reticule is directly over them. This is due in part to the inaccuracy of some weapons, and also to the fact that the game itself assumes you're trying to shoot aliens, not objects -- so while the bad guys are generally easy to hit, other odds and ends may not be.
