Basics
Shellshock: Nam '67 is a third person action game that places you in the boots of a young special forces operative in the early days of the Vietnam War. Shellshock is a brutal game, and not for the faint of heart, but its gritty portrayal of the realities of war make it somewhat unique in the world of shooter gameplay. You and your squad must complete a variety of missions, from jungle sweeps to village infiltrations, set in a world that makes it hard to retain even a shred of humanity.
Missions
Shellshock includes 13 action-packed missions with objectives that range from the standard "blast everything" to more complex investigations, position holding and even trap disarmament. One interesting thing about Shellshock is that the missions tend to be pretty wide-open, meaning that it's up to you to locate your mission objective(s) and then do whatever needs to be done. Exploration and wandering are an important part of this game, and you need to listen carefully to your squadmates.
Controls
Shellshock plays like a standard third person shooter, working with either a mouse/keyboard combination or your favorite gamepad. You can customize your controls to a certain degree in the game options, but for the most part the controls aren't overly complex and only take a few minutes to learn. Despite the claims that stealth can be useful in parts of Shellshock, this is almost a pure action game, so don't worry too much about anything other than moving and shooting.
Base Camp
Between missions you'll return to base camp, where you can wander around, take in the local sights and chat with your squadmates. You'll also receive award chits based on performance in the previous mission -- cash these in on a variety of powerups or, ah, alone-time with some of the local...ladies of the evening. There's never any threat in base camp, so while you're there, treat it as the soldiers did: a quiet little island of peace between the complete insanity of war.
Squad
During most missions you'll be traveling with a squad of AI-controlled troops to back you up. Here's a little secret: these guys are virtually invulnerable except during very specific sequences. You can't issue orders to them, but they do a pretty good job of drawing fire away from you and even taking out their share of North Vietnamese troops. Be sure to listen to the chatter among these guys, as it will often reveal clues or information about the mission objective.
Tip: Headshots
It's kinda morbid, but the game keeps track of your kills, including any clean headshots (an instant kill in most cases) you manage. The more of these you make, the more chits you'll get to spend in base camp.
Tip: Be Vewy Quiet
Though your commander may tell you to be sneaky in some missions, it's not strictly necessary. Stealthy kills are best accomplished through slow movement and clever knife use, but they're very hard to manage.
Tip: Rest Here
Your health regenerates slowly over time. Not particularly realistic, it's true; but it makes the game a bit easier. If you're hurting, find a quiet corner of the jungle and relax for a few minutes.
