Basics

To move your character, push the controller in any direction. Four main commands are available to you. "Talk" lets you interact with other characters. "Item" allows you to use items in your inventory. "Magic" lets you cast magic spells, provided that you have a character in your party with this ability. Finally, "Search" lets you examine suspicious areas to uncover hidden items or information about your quest. Use the controller and the action button to choose between these options.

Shops

You begin the game as a young knight in training in the kingdom of Guardiana. After a brief conversation with the king, you will be given one hundred gold pieces and a small army of loyal soldiers to command. To spend your cash, find an item shop (it's the building marked with a bag) and talk to the shopkeeper. You will be given four options. "Buy" lets you purchase items, "Sell" lets you sell items, "Repair" fixes broken weapons, and "Deals" lets you purchase specially priced items.

Combat

Combat in Shining Force is turn-based. When it is your turn to move a character, you may position them on any darkened square with the controller. The distance a character can travel depends on the terrain...you'll be able to travel further on a grassy field than in a forest or mountain range. Terrain helps determine the success you'll have while fighting enemies -- some warriors are more comfortable attacking from forests or mountains.

Commanding the Troops

When you have made your selection, push the action button. You will be given four different options. "Attack" lets you strike nearby enemies, "Magic" allows magic users to cast helpful spells, "Stay" keeps the character in place until the next turn, and "Item" lets you use any items in your inventory. Use the controller to select an option and the action button to confirm your choice. When attacking enemies, select them with the controller and confirm your choice with the action button.

Injury and Recovery

If an enemy attacks one of your soldiers, that character will lose hit points. If a character's hit points are depleted, he or she will be removed from the battle. If the leader of the Shining Force is defeated, you will lose the fight and be sent back to the last save point you visited. Save points allow you to "Save" your progress in the game, "Cure" characters with status ailments, "Raise" defeated characters from the dead, and "Promote" those fighters who deserve it.

Goals

Your goal in Shining Force is to defeat the forces of the Dark Dragon, recruit allies to aid you in your quest, and ultimately face off against the master of darkness himself. When the Dark Dragon has succumbed to the might of your army, the game ends and peace again returns to the world. At least, until you play the exciting sequel, Shining Force II!

Tip: Tough Going

Non-flying characters can't pass through mountainous areas or over water. Rough terrain will slow most of your characters down while engaged in combat, but later in the game you'll find some characters who are more at home in forests and deserts than they are on grass, reversing the movement penalties.

Tip: Long Reach

For an edge in battle, take advantage of each soldier's unique abilities. For instance, Ken the centaur knight can hurl javelins at distant enemies. This lets him stay a safe distance from goblins and dwarves, which can only fight adjacent opponents.

Tip: Characters

Don't be afraid to explore, and talk to everyone you see. Being social is a good way to meet powerful new allies. There are 30 characters that may be recruited into the Shining Force, so do your best not to miss any!

Tip: Healing

Stock up on items like medical herbs in preparation for future fights. Make sure each character in your army has at least one healing item on hand at all times, especially those soldiers without the ability to cast heal spells.
