Gameplay
Your goal is to find out what happened to Princess Jessa and your father, Sir Mortred, and rescue them. You’ll also have to deal with Dark Sol, who has appropriated the Labyrinth and is using it as his headquarters to take over the kingdom of Thornwood. Throughout the game, your actions will move the story forward as you interact with other characters and accomplish tasks.
Controls
Shining in the Darkness employs a menu system that makes control quite easy. The majority of the game takes place in the Labyrinth, where you will interact with the game world from a first-person perspective. Use the directional keys to move forward, back and to rotate your view. The town and other sections, however, employ a horizontal scrolling interface. Move left and right to find items and areas of interest, and select the appropriate menu item.
The Menu
Press fire to open the menu, which changes based on context. If you open it while in front of a building, for example, the top item is “enter.” Use the left and right buttons to highlight the menu item you want, and fire again to confirm the selection. Combat uses the same menu interface, though the menu selections are appropriate to the combat situation. You can choose to attack, run away, cast a spell or use an item.
Equipment
You’ll need a lot of equipment for this journey, and you can buy most of it in town. As you defeat monsters, you’ll collect gold to spend at the Armorer’s and Weaponsmith’s shops. Special equipment, such as healing herbs, can be purchased at the Alkemist (presumably she's better at healing than she is at spelling). Choose "Item" from the menu, then "Give", "Equip" or "Use" to do that action.
The Shrine
The shrine is an important venue in town. You’ll be moving back and forth between town and the Labyrinth, and the shrine is the only place where you can save your game. More importantly, if you’re killed while adventuring, a Valkyrie will collect your body and deliver it to the shrine for revival. You cannot be killed for good in Shining in the Darkness, though a death might be a considerable setback to your progress -- and wallet.
Tip: Advice
Talk to everyone, especially in the tavern and the castle. And don’t just talk to them once; characters say different things at different times. Also, new people or avenues might appear in places you’ve already visited.
Tip: Getting Started
Don’t stray too far from the entrance your first few visits. Fight the little monsters, get some gold, level up, and head back to town to refresh. These enemies aren’t worth much, but you’ll get the feel of combat and be able to improve a little before moving ahead.
Tip: Angel Feather
The Labyrinth didn’t get its name by accident; the place is huge and incredibly complicated. Be sure to carry an Angel Feather with you. This item zips you right back to town. It’s a one-use item, so buy a new one each time until Pyra eventually learns the spell Egress, which does the same thing.
Tip: Wisdom Seeds
Buy a Wisdom Seed from the Alchemist and it’ll show you a map of the level you’re on and where you’ve been. Like the Angel Feather, this is a one-use item. Pyra starts with the View spell, that duplicates this item. Don't confuse it with Milo's Vision spell, which simply tells you what an item does.
Tip: Long Way To Go
And did we mention that the Labyrinth is five levels deep? This is a seriously big place, and while Angel Feathers might get you out, they won’t help you find the way around. You’re going to want to draw a map for that. Graph paper: a dungeon delver’s best friend.
