Rings
As you zoom through each level, you will collect gold rings. Collect 100 rings and you will gain an extra life. But get hit and you'll lose them all! When this happens, race around as quickly as possible to recover as many rings as you can before taking another hit. In addition to awarding you extra lives, rings keep Sonic and Knuckles alive. As long as you have at least one ring collected, you won’t lose a life.
Basics
The essence of the Sonic series is to blast through each level as fast as possible to take down Dr. Robotnik. Offering nearly identical gameplay to Sonic The Hedgehog 3, the inclusion of Knuckles brings a few special moves that differentiate him from his hedgehog rival. Knuckles can glide by holding the jump button down in the air. Glide into a wall to latch on and start climbing.
Powerups
Powerup boxes contain items familiar to players of Sonic The Hedgehog 3: the Ring Box will grant ten rings. The Star Box will give you invincibility. The Flame, Water and Lightning Boxes offer special protective shields. Look for Star Posts as you go, which act as checkpoints if you lose a life. There are also bonus stages to unlock, including a slot machine mini-game.
Tip: Special Stages
In order to enter into the Special Stages where you will get a chance to grab the seven Chaos Emeralds, you need to locate and jump through the giant gold rings, which are well hidden in each level.
Tip: Super Sonic
If you succeed in all of the bonus stages, collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds in the process, you can transform into Super characters. To become Super Sonic or Knuckles, get at least 50 rings and jump twice.
Tip: Bonus Rounds
In addition to the Special Stages, you can enter into bonus rounds where you will be able to collect tons of rings and earn extra lives. To enter into a bonus round, collect at least 50 rings and then activate a checkpoint to make a ring of stars appear. Quickly jump into the stars to be whisked away.
