Powerups
Powerups are found inside monitors -- break open the monitors to claim the powerup inside. The ring icon will add 10 rings to Knuckles' current total. A gray ball is a shield that will absorb one hit. A sparkle will grant Knuckles temporary invincibility, and the rare Knuckles portrait gives one extra life.
Controls
Knuckles brings new features to Sonic 2's gameplay, but the basic controls are the same: move with the directional keys, duck by pressing down, and jump with the jump button. If you press down while moving, Knuckles will perform a rolling attack. Press down while standing still and repeatedly press the jump button to rev up a Spin Dash, then release the down key to shoot forward in a burst of speed.
Special Moves
Knuckles can perform some moves that Sonic can't -- when in the air during a jump, press and hold the jump button and Knuckles will glide forward. If Knuckles glides into a wall, he'll grab onto it; climb with the up and down directional keys. The ability to climb over high walls gives Knuckles access to some hidden shortcuts, and you never know what you'll find up there!
Rings
Pick up any of the spinning golden rings you see -- Knuckles can only take one hit before going down, unless he's holding at least one ring. If Knuckles is hit while he possesses rings, he'll drop them instead. If you can manage to collect 100 rings without dropping any, you'll get an extra life.
Tip: Special Stages
If you touch a checkpoint post with at least 50 rings, a swirling ring of stars will appear overhead. Enter this ring and you'll be taken to a special stage for a chance to win a Chaos Emerald! Grab as many of the rings as you can as Knuckles races down the half-pipe, but avoid the bombs (they make you drop ten rings). If you collect enough rings to meet each quota you're given, the Chaos Emerald is yours!
Tip: Metropolis Zone Boss
Some people consider this game to be impossible to finish, because Knuckles' inability to jump as high as Sonic did in the original game makes the boss of the Metropolis Zone extremely difficult to defeat. You may have to trade hits with him -- get hit, collect your fallen rings, then wait for an opening to counterattack -- but it is possible!
