Characters

Choose from Sonic, Tails, Amy Rose, or the evil Dr. Eggman. Like any kart racing game worth its salt, each of the four characters you choose from has different speed and handling. But they all balance each other fairly well, so there’s no clear-cut "best character" to pick -- go with the one that suits your playing style.

Powerups

Mashing the gas and going fast isn’t the only key to winning in Sonic Drift. You’ll find rings and items littering each course. After collecting two rings, press “up” on the controller for a quick burst of speed. Break open blue and red monitors to earn invincibility and instant speed boosts.

Gameplay Modes

The main game mode is Chaos GP, a set of six races based on the original six Sonic the Hedgehog stages. The race for the Green Emerald is the easiest mode, while Red is the hardest. "Free Run" is a time attack mode where you race through any stage you like in order to score the best time.

Tip: Springs

Springs aren't terribly useful -- there aren't any obstacles on the track to jump over -- but they do give you temporary relief from the friction of the road. Oddly, it's much easier to steer in the air than it is on the ground, especially if you're going around a hairpin turn.

Tip: Turning

It's usually a good idea to let up on the gas a little when making a turn. Most turns, especially the tight ones late in the game, will send your character to the outer edge of the track, where roadside hazards can send you spinning. If you don't keep your foot on the pedal, though, it's easier to stay on the road.
