Controls
Like its predecessor, Sonic 2 is a high-speed scrolling platform game. Use the direction keys to move Sonic and the action button to jump. Jumping also serves as Sonic's attack; use it to take out enemies and break open containers. (This goes for Tails as well.) To perform a spin-dash, press down and tap the jump button repeatedly to power up. Release the button to fling Sonic forward in a spinning ball of light-speed animal fury. Anything he hits while in this form is in for a world of hurt.
Getting Started
In single player games of Sonic 2, you'll control the heroic hedgehog, while the computer takes charge of Tails. In two-player games, the second player controls the two-tailed fox. The action follows the hedgehog, though, and Tails often gets left behind. It's polite to stop and let him catch up every now and then. He is there to help, after all.
Items
Gold rings are scattered everywhere; pick up as many as you can. Every ring that Sonic or Tails grabs increases your score, and collecting 100 earns you an extra life. If an enemy touches Sonic, he'll drop all the rings he's carrying. So long as you've got some rings, Sonic can't be killed by an enemy. (Tails will help collect rings, but he can't lose them.) Keep your eyes peeled for special powerups and bonuses, contained inside TV sets throughout each level.
Winning
Make your way through each of the game's eleven levels, collecting items and Chaos Emeralds. Most levels are composed of two acts. At the end of each second act, Dr. Robotnik will turn up in one of his extraordinarily deadly and surprisingly ill-constructed machines to try and finish Sonic off. Dr. Robotnik's machines may take more punishment than his average robot drones, but keep showing him who's boss, and you'll eventually put him down for the count.
Tip: Spin Dash
Sonic's spin-dash is more than just an attack. It hurls him with such force and speed that you can also use it to fling him off ramps, through loop-the-loops and more. And as if he weren't fast enough, the spin-dash makes Sonic even faster.
Tip: Checkpoint
As in the original Sonic, hitting these Star Lamps will set a checkpoint you'll return to if you lose a life. If you're carrying more than 50 rings when you touch a lamp, watch for a star gate to open above it -- jump in to reach a bonus level.
Tip: Bonus Stages
The bonus levels are high-speed half pipes, where Sonic and Tails must collect a set number of rings while avoiding bombs. If you collect enough rings, you're rewarded with a Chaos Emerald.
Tip: Super Sonic
Get all seven Chaos Emeralds and you can turn into Super Sonic: nearly invincible and deadly to enemies!
Tip: Sonic Spinball
In the Casino Night zone, Sonic can bounce around on huge pinball machines. Whenever he's on a flipper, hit the jump button to launch him into the air. And watch for the slot machines in Casino Night -- land in the central hub to set the wheels spinning. All kinds of prizes (and hazards) await. Are you a gambler?
