Controls

The controls have been adjusted and tightened a bit in this version to make it more responsive and balanced, but the actual mechanics haven't changed. You'll want to play with a joystick or gamepad, preferably one with six buttons. Three of these are for increasingly more powerful punches, three for kicks; speed of the attack decreases with power. By linking multiple moves and attacks together you'll discover your character's special attacks and secret moves, which are the real key to victory.

Basics

The most respected installment of the venerated Street Fighter series is here! Like its predecessors, Street Fighter III: Third Strike is a 2D fighting game in which you punch and kick your way through a ladder of nasty toughs, using all the special techniques and combat skills at your command. Make it far enough and you may even face the evil Gill, a returning villain who brings new meaning to the word "nasty." Defeat him and you've proven yourself the ultimate fighter!

Characters

The first step before beginning a game is to choose which character will be yours. SFIII:TS offers 19 to choose from, each with their own capabilities and styles. Some players pick a favorite and stay there; others choose to play the field and get a taste for everyone. Once you've chosen a fighter for yourself, you get to choose between one of two opponents for each round in the single player mode. They're evenly matched, so it's mostly a matter of who you're best against.

Grading

You receive a grade after each fight, the judges scoring you based on overall performance, blows landed, damage taken, super moves used and so forth. Higher grades don't necessarily mean anything -- if you win the fight you win the fight -- but it's a useful way to gauge your overall skill level. Bonus stages appear after your third and sixth successful fight: the classic "Car Crush" bonus from SFII is back, supplemented with a Parry the Ball stage, the name of which pretty much says it all.

Features

Of course, the most visible new addition to Third Strike is the return of Chun Li, one of the franchise's most popular fighters, with all new graphics and animations. Three additional characters have also been added, and the controls for parrying have been adjusted to improve balance over the previous SFIII games. Specific to this Dreamcast version of the game is the System Direction screen, which allows you to customize virtually every aspect of the experience.

Tip: Super Moves

The bar underneath each character is your Super Meter -- it fills as you land blows and avoid damage. Once full you can unleash one of your character's three Super Combos, attacks so devastating that they'll usually reduce the enemy's health by 40% or more. Some moves can be "stored," so you can chain them together.

Tip: Parrying

A parry is different from a block in that it gives you a chance to reverse the attack and strike your opponent when he's not expecting it. The trick is in the timing: tap forward to parry high or aerial attacks, down to parry low ones. Your position has to be exactly right for this to work, and when it does you only have a split second to counterattack.

Tip: Blocking

Just tap backward to block an enemy's blow. This softens the hit, reducing (but not eliminating) the damage. However, repeated blocks can cause your character to become stunned and momentarily helpless.

Tip: Throws

If you're positioned right, you can grab and throw your opponent. Tap light punch and light kick simultaneously while pushing forward or back to execute a throw. As with all moves, the timing must be right, but with practice you'll be tossing people around the ring with no trouble.
