Controls
The controls for this game are pretty straightforward mouse and keyboard. Drive with the direction keys: forward and back are accelerate and brake, left and right for steering. There are also keys for the clutch, upshift and downshift. You can customize your controls in the options menu, and even create secondary controls so people with different preferences don't need to change your settings. Use the toolbars along the top and bottom to navigate the game when you're not racing.
Basics
In Street Legal Racing: Redline, you're trying to earn some respect -- and some money -- in underground street racing. Starting with a measly $24,000, you'll need to buy some wheels and tweak your vehicles out with upgrades, then head out on the highway and cream some opponents in order to bring in the extra money for more cars and upgrades. Those opponents are seasoned racers, however, so it will take all your skill if you hope to dominate in this dangerous, exhilarating sport.
Gameplay Modes
Redline has two game types: quick race and career. Quick race is a race against a single opponent for prestige and bragging rights without any choosing of cars or upgrading of equipment. The main portion of the game is the career mode. In career, you buy and maintain your cars, including upgrades and repairs, and challenge (or be challenged) to race for money. To start a career, click the option in the main menu, enter your name and head to one of the car dealers to buy some wheels.
The Garage
When you're not racing in career mode, most of your time is spent in the garage. This is where you maintain, repair and improve your vehicles. Use the toolbar at the top of the screen to navigate through the garage options. To see what each button in the toolbar does, just hover your mouse over it and a tip will appear. You can look at the parts catalog and order upgrades, schedule repairs and even visit the test track to take your rides for a spin from this screen.
Upgrades
Cars aren't the only part of the equation. To really dominate, you must master the art of tricking out your wheels with better equipment -- you can be sure that your opponents are doing the same thing. Improved brakes, engines, transmission...it's all available for sale through the parts catalog interface in the garage. You can also customize your vehicles with a paint job and repair any damage you've taken during a race. Try to keep some money in reserve at all times for repairs and upgrades.
Buying and Selling Cars
Much of the strategy of the career game is in buying, selling and modifying vehicles. There's a used lot and a new lot in town -- both have rotating stocks of vehicles, so you'll want to check both every now and then to see if a car you want has come in. You can sell unwanted vehicles to the used lot; this is the best way to raise lots of cash quickly. You are allowed to own multiple cars and race whichever ones you want, though, so don't feel like you have to sell one car if you want another.
Tip: Nitrous
A nitrous oxide system can give you a huge short-term burst of speed, great for zipping past your opponents. The default key to activate nitrous is N.
Tip: Radio Stations
You can switch radio stations in your vehicle and listen to different types of music -- hit the . and , keys to change stations.
Tip: Handbrake
Activate the handbrake to allow for extremely sharp turns at high speeds. Default key: H.
Tip: Car Info
Click on the information button for an exhaustive list of specifications about the cars you can drive -- everything from drag coefficients to horsepower and torque ratios.
Tip: Repairs
You'll want to repair your vehicles as they take damage, but of course this eats into your available funds. It's not necessary to completely repair the vehicle -- you can also get specific parts and systems fixed.
