Jump Attacks

While jumping, if you press attack in mid air, your character will perform a kick or similar move that will knock any enemies it hits to the ground. However, if you hold down while doing a jumping attack, it will just stun your enemies, leaving you time to move in and continue a combo rather than waiting for them to get back on their feet.

Basics

Streets of Rage 2 has simple controls: use the directional pad or keys to move your fighter. Kick and punch with the action button, or hit the special button to unleash each character's unique special moves. Finally, use the jump button to jump. You can also pick up weapons or other items by standing over them and pressing the action button. Press action and jump together to throw the item.

Special Attacks

Pushing the special button while standing still will activate one special attack. If the attack doesn't hit anyone, it won't cost you anything. However, should the attack make contact, a small portion of your life bar will be depleted. Pressing the special button while pushing left or right will unleash a more potent special move. This attack usually takes longer to execute, always depletes some of your life bar and will leave you open to retaliation if you're not careful.

Additional Attacks

If you double tap left or right while pressing the attack button, your character will do a lunging attack, which can usually deal major damage to multiple enemies. Also, pressing the attack and jump buttons simultaneously will allow your fighter to do a quick attack behind them, clearing out any enemies sneaking up from the rear.

Grappling

Performing a grapple move (by simply walking into an enemy) opens up a slew of different options. Tap or hold the attack button for various moves. If you're facing your enemy, pull away from them and push the attack button to throw them. If you're holding your opponent from behind, hit the attack button to do a big damage throw on them. While grappling, hitting the jump button will allow you to vault over their shoulders, letting you choose which attacks to do next.

Tip: Mania Mode

Finish the game on the hardest setting to unlock "mania" mode, which is even more difficult. Just hold the special and attack buttons on the controller when hitting start.

Tip: Hidden Life

In stage two, after fighting your way through the moving truck, move behind the front of the vehicle near the top of the screen and press the action button. There's a hidden extra life back there.

Tip: Watch the Shadow

Jet, the boss of level two, is hard to hit because it's difficult to tell how far he is from the bottom of the screen. Watch his shadow closely on the mesh floor, and line your character up with that to successfully hit him.

Tip: Another Extra Life

In stage three, after fighting the giant head, move down into the mist directly below where his neck appeared and hit the action button. You should pick up another extra life.
