Special Attacks

When the special bar at the top-center of the screen is full, using a special attack will only take a sliver of life off of your health bar. The lower the special bar, the more life a special move will cost. Hitting the special attack button alone will perform a standing special move, while holding in a direction while tapping special attack will unleash a separate move.

Basics

Streets of Rage 3 is a side-scrolling brawler in which you pummel every enemy you see into submission before facing a boss character and, ultimately, moving on to the next level. Use the directional pad (or keys) to move around the screen. Your three main actions are attack, special attack and jump. For a rear attack, tap the attack and jump buttons together.

Dashing Attacks

Tapping left or right twice will send your fighter running in that direction. While running, hit the attack button to perform a multiple-hit move that will do very nice damage. If your character is holding a weapon at the time, it will usually modify this attack somewhat. Also, tapping up or down twice will make your character roll in that direction, which is an excellent way to avoid projectiles.

Jumping Attacks

If you jump while moving in any direction, and then tap attack, your character will perform a jump kick. Jumping straight up and hitting attack will perform a different jumping maneuver. Pushing down while performing a jump kick will unleash a stun maneuver that won't knock your opponent back, which is a great way to start combos.

Tip: Play Roo

Unlock Roo (a fighting kangaroo) by defeating his trainer instead of him. Roo should hop off the screen once this happens. Now, if you lose all of your lives and choose to continue, scroll through the selectable characters until Roo's face appears.

Tip: Shiva's Kip Up

As you fight the first boss, Shiva, be careful whenever you knock him down. Stand next to him while he's laid flat, and he'll almost always nail you with a jump kick as he rises.

Tip: Play Shiva

To unlock Shiva (the first boss) as a playable character, hold attack and start on controller one just as you beat him. Now when the continue screen pops up, you should be able to select Shiva from the character list.
