Basics
Puzzle Fighter draws its inspiration from many other puzzle games, particularly Puyo Puyo and Columns. The screen is divided into two halves, and each player has his own well which fills with gems falling from above. You can move the gems left, right or down and rotate them either clockwise or counter-clockwise. The goal of the game is cause the gems in your opponent's well to reach the top of the screen by shattering the gems on your half.
Attacks
While it's possible to simply hope your opponent is a poor enough player that his gems will reach the top on their own, there's a competitive element to Puzzle Fighter. As you clear gems away from your well, "garbage" gems are sent to the other player's side. These gems cannot be cleared away until their counter reaches zero. In keeping with the Street Fighter theme, the more gems you send in your "combo" the more garbage you attack with.
Crashes and Breakers
Unlike many puzzle games, your gems don't automatically disappear when you connect three or four. Instead, they fuse together into larger, rectangular gems. To shatter a gem and clear it out of your space, you must use the Crash Gems (circular stones). When a Crash Gem comes into contact with other gems of the same color, it destroys them. Occasionally, you will be given a rare Breaker Gem (diamond stone) which will destroy all on-screen gems of whichever color it lands on.
Tip: Tactics
Each character sends gems to his or her opponent's side in a set pattern. Characters like Ryu and Morrigan have devious patterns, with lots of different colors spaced apart, while Sakura has a simpler pattern with few colors. Choose a character appropriate for your skills level; if you're an expert, try using a character with a simple pattern to make things harder for yourself.
Tip: Size Matters
While it's tempting to send gems back at your foe as quickly as possible, patience can be a virtue. The more gems of a single color that connect to either other, the larger the fused gem it creates. The larger the gem you shatter, the more garbage you send across. Breaking one 4x3 gem is worth more than three 2x2 gems.
Tip: Caution
On the other hand, it's a good idea not to get too carried away with building large gems. If you opponent has a chance to cover it with garbage, you'll be stuck with a massive, inaccessible stone on your screen that can't be used at all. Know your opponent and balance immediate attacks with more complex tactics.
