Basics
The Cameron Files: Pharaoh's Curse is a point and click adventure game similar to Myst. As detective Alan Cameron, your job is pretty simple: find your missing friend Moira, find out what the Nazis want, find out why a mummy is wandering around Cairo, and find out how it all fits together...actually your job isn't really simple. But it's all in a day's work for Cameron, whose detecting always seems to focus on the strange and unexplained. To begin, select New Game from the main menu.
Story
Cameron's friend, archaeologist Moira McFarley, has a knack for getting into trouble, and this time she's in over her head. Cameron receives a message from Moira inviting him to join her in Egypt, but when he arrives, she's not there. It seems that she was studying some ancient statuettes somehow related to a mummy exhibit, but the details are hazy. Cameron's main job is to find out what happened to Moira, but getting to the bottom of that mystery means solving a whole bunch of others.
Controls
If you've played one point and click adventure, you've played them all. Control Cameron's view by moving the mouse, and left click to interact with the world. The onscreen cursor changes to various contextual icons when you can talk, use, or move around. Right click to access inventory -- to use an item, left click on it, then left click again on the item that you'd like to affect. Also in the inventory screen are two folios that allow you to review movies and documents you've collected.
Puzzles
Like all adventures, Pharaoh's Curse is a game of puzzles -- logic puzzles, maze puzzles, item puzzles, you name it. Cameron's task is forever complicated by locked doors, recalcitrant Egyptians, goosestepping Nazis, snarling mummies and worse. In order to get around these obstacles, you usually need to find the right item or solve a puzzle of some sort.
Tip: That Wasn't there Before
Some critical items have to be "triggered" -- that is, they don't appear until you've completed some prerequisite puzzle or game objective. It's wise to retrace your steps from time to time to see if anything has appeared.
Tip: Save (me from the mummy)
The game includes ample save slots, and you'd be wise to take advantage of them. Though Pharaoh's Curse is generally slow paced, like most adventures, it also includes a few dangerous timed sequences that can quickly kill you off.
Tip: Now You See Me
Some items tend to disappear into the background graphics. You'll learn to pick them out with practice, but make a point to carefully check every scene so you don't miss anything.
Tip: Steal this Clue
Any veteran adventurer will tell you that the first rule of these games is to pick up everything that's not nailed down. You never know when you might need to combine a ball of yarn, a bobby pin and a tub of jelly to form a makeshift grappling hook.
