Basics

King of Fighters '95 is the first of the seminal franchise to leave the arcade and span multiple home platforms. Some consider it to be the kickoff of the series. With 26 playable characters drawn from many classic SNK games, lush backdrops to the action and a gripping story (sort of), King of Fighters '95 is 2D combat at its best, and is remembered alongside the Street Fighters and Mortal Kombats of the world. Team-based bouts, big backstory and high customizability make this game stand out.

Combat

Compared to the other fighting games out there, King of Fighters '95 is pretty simple as far as controls go -- combos and special attacks are extremely straightforward. This is straight up bare knuckles fighting. Just watch the introductory screens to learn how to play, and then head into the arena for your first bouts. As with all fighting games, practice makes perfect. The early rungs on the championship ladder, while not exactly easy, will hold your hand until you get used to the controls.

Team Play

King of Fighters '95's claim to fame is the team-based structure of play -- bouts are fought between teams of three, with one member of each team fighting in each match. The game comes with eight premade teams based around themes (characters from certain games, villains, good guys, etc.), and you can use one of those by selecting "No" when prompted to go into the Team Edit mode. If you choose "Yes," you can create your own team from scratch and even set your fighters' order.

Storyline

As you climb the ladder, you'll be treated to inter-fight scenes that unlock more and more of the plot and begin to unravel the mystery behind the villain Rugal's schemes. KOF'95 generally continues the story begun in the previous year's version, but it takes some liberties too. All the characters in the game have backstories and agendas, so you may see many different perspectives as the game progresses.

Tip: Last Resort

You have one last chance to turn things around when your character is near defeat: last resort moves are huge, devastating attacks that are only available when your health is extremely low.

Tip: Dodge This

Learn how to use the dodge skill effectively and you'll become a much stronger opponent. Avoiding damage is the best way to stay in the fight long enough to deliver some of your own.

Tip: Psyche!

You can psyche up your character and deliver attacks with added power and speed. It takes a moment to center your chi (or whatever you're doing when you psyche up) so be sure you have a second to spare.
