Matches
Each of your three fighters is given a full health bar at the start of the battle. As a contestant takes damage, that health bar shrinks, and when it starts flashing red, the fighter is in danger of being knocked out. When one fighter is knocked out, another takes his place. When all members of a team are knocked out, that team loses the match! If you lose a fight, you can step back into the ring for a rematch by tapping the start button before time expires.
Getting Started
Press the start button at the title screen to start the game. After a brief tutorial, you'll be taken to the character select screen. This is where you'll assemble your fierce team of fighters. Use the controller to move the cursor over a character you'd like to select, then tap one of the attack buttons to choose a color for that fighter. After you've chosen three members of your team, use the controller and attack buttons to select your team's starting order.
Movement
The key to victory in any fight is not landing punches, but learning to avoid them. First, press left or right on the controller to walk in either direction, You can also run toward your opponent by tapping right twice in rapid succession, and retreat by tapping left twice. Now that you've got those moves down, it's time to learn to evade attacks. Hold down to duck, and tap up to jump into the air. Finally, hold away from your opponent to block attacks.
Techniques
The fighters have learned some new tricks since the first tournament in 1994. Press the light kick and hard punch buttons together to add insult to injury with a taunt. Press both hard attack buttons together when near an opponent for a devastating knock down attack. The contestants also have their old moves, including the evasion and charge. Press light punch and light kick together to dodge attacks, and hold light punch, light kick, and hard punch to boost your power meter.
Controls
This is where things get really exciting! Each fighter has a selection of four different basic attacks, performed with the light punch, light kick, hard punch, and hard kick buttons. Punches generally strike the head or the chest, while kicks hit the opponent's torso or legs. Light attacks can be delivered with blazing speed, while hard attacks do heavy damage and may knock down your rival. You'll need to learn when to use all four attacks to emerge victorious in a fight.
Special Moves
Each character has a handful of special moves and at least one super move. These incredible attacks allow the fighters to harness the power of the elements to overwhelm their adversaries. These abilities are unlocked with rolling controller motions (for instance, down, down-right, and right in rapid succession), followed by one of the attack buttons. Super moves are even more powerful but can only be used when the power meter is charged or your health is dangerously low.
Tip: Change For The Better
King of Fighters fans be warned -- many of the characters in the games have refined their martial arts techniques, resulting in special moves that work differently than they had in KOFs '94 and '95. Experiment with each of your favorite heroes before taking on the later, more difficult matches.
Tip: Super Moves
It's tempting to put all your faith in super moves, especially since you can perform them as often as you like when your energy is low. However, the computer opponent knows when they're coming and will usually counter them. Don't take the risk unless you're sure you can land that opening blow!
