Getting Started

Press the start button at the title screen. After a tutorial introducing you to some of the new features offered in King of Fighters '98, you'll be taken to the mode select screen. Press left and right on the controller to choose between Advanced and Extra mode, then tap any attack button to select that fighting style. Finally, use the controller to highlight each of the three members of your team, then tap an attack button to choose a color for that character.

Teams

Before the match begins, you'll be asked to select a starting order for your team. Press up and down on the controller to highlight one of your three fighters, then tap an attack button to choose the highlighted hero as your team's captain. After you've picked a second character in your line-up, the third will be automatically chosen to fight last, and you'll be taken to the first in a series of three-on-three battles.

Movement

The bell has rung and the battle has begun. You're itching to raise some havoc in the ring, but you'll need to learn to dodge punches before you can throw them! Press left and right to walk in those directions. Double-tapping left and right lets you move more quickly in those directions. Hold down to duck high attacks, and press the controller away from your opponent to block his strikes. Finally, tap up to jump into the air, or down, then up and left or right for a long jump.

Matches

Like the previous games in the series, the object of King of Fighters '98 is to knock out all the members of the opposing team. Each fighter has a life bar, which shrinks as the character is struck by punches, kicks, and other attacks. When the life bar is emptied, that fighter is knocked out and another one comes to take his or her place. When all fighters on a team are beaten, that team loses the match. If your team was defeated, just hit the start button before time expires for a rematch!

Controls

Now it's time to bring the pain to your opponent! Each fighter has four different attacks, including a light punch, light kick, hard punch, and hard kick. Tap these buttons while standing, ducking, and jumping to gain access to all of your characters' most savage strikes! You can also perform especially powerful special moves by entering controller motions- for instance, down, down-right, and right in a smooth sweep- followed by one of the attack buttons.

Gameplay Modes

The Advanced and Extra modes in King of Fighters '98 lets you play the game your way. Advanced gives you a segmented power bar, which can be filled by striking your enemy and blocking attacks. Tap light punch, light kick, and hard punch together to put your fighter in MAX mode, strengthening his strikes at the cost of one stock of your power meter. Extra kicks it old-school with a single bar that must be charged by holding down light punch, light kick, and hard punch.

Tip: Advantages

Use the continue service to help even the odds in a tough fight. After you continue, a roulette wheel will appear with several advantages printed on it. Tap the light punch button to stop the wheel and receive your reward, or press hard kick if you think you've got what it takes to win in a fair fight.

Tip: Super Super Moves

When playing in Advanced mode, you can double the power of your super moves by first entering Max mode before performing them. While playing in Extra mode, you can boost the strength of your supers by letting your life bar drop to 15%, then holding down light punch, light kick, and hard punch to charge up your power meter.
