Controls

Attacks are performed with the four attack buttons. Light punch sends a jab straight for the opponent's face, while hard punch is a more crushing blow to the chest. Similarly, light kick does less damage but is faster than hard kick. In addition to punches and kicks, each character has his or her own signature attacks called special moves. To perform them, enter a controller motion (for instance, down, down-left, left) followed by an attack button.

Super Moves

The most devastating attacks in the game are super moves. However, these attacks cost one stock of your power meter. Your power meter is shown at the bottom of the screen, along with a digit indicating the number of stocks you have left. The meter can be filled by attacking your opponent. You can also bypass the meter entirely by pressing light kick and hard punch together -- this puts you in MAX mode, which lets you perform super moves at will for a limited time.

Getting Started

Press start at the title screen, then one of the attack buttons to skip the tutorial. At the character select screen, use the controller to highlight each member of your team, then press an attack button to select his or her wardrobe color. Next, press up and down to select your first opponents, and press an attack button to lock in that choice. Finally, choose your team's fighting order.

Movement

When you arrive at your first battle, press left and right on the controller to walk in those directions. Pressing the controller away from your opponent puts you in a defensive stance, letting you block most attacks. Tapping left twice or right twice will let you dash in either of those directions. Hold down to duck, and tap up to jump into the air. Tapping down, then up will give your jump added height.

Matches

Like in past King of Fighters games, the first team to knock out all members of their rival team is declared the winner and advances to a more difficult battle. Each fighter is given a limited supply of energy, shown at the top of the screen. When one fighter's energy is depleted, he or she is knocked out and replaced with another team member. If all of your team members are knocked out, you can start the fight over by tapping the start button at the continue screen before time expires.

Tip: Snake Bite

Career criminal Ryuji Yamazaki is able to attack from long distances with his lightning fast Serpent Strike. Press down, down-left, and left on the controller in a sweeping motion, then hold down either the light punch, light kick, or hard punch buttons. Release the button when you're ready to strike!

Tip: Take It To The Max

Don't ignore the MAX mode! For the price of a single stock of your power meter, you could perform up to three super moves. When you're in MAX mode, you can also use a MAX super move. This will cost you an additional stock of your power meter, but does mind-blowing damage!
