Movement

When the fight begins, the team member you selected to be first appears on the screen, standing next to his opponent. Press left or right on the controller to walk in those directions, and double tap left or right to dash. Point the controller in the opposite direction of your opponent to block their attacks. Finally, press up to jump into the air and hold down to duck, putting you in the right position to target your opponent's feet and legs.

Getting Started

Press the one player start button to begin the game. You'll be sent to the character select screen, and asked to pick a leader for your team of fighters. Press the controller in any direction to choose a captain for your team, then press the light punch button. After you've chosen a captain and two other team members, you'll be asked to select the order in which the fighters will appear. You can organize your team by pressing the light punch, light kick, and hard kick buttons.

Controls

Each character in the game is given two punches and two kicks. Press the light punch and light kick buttons for quick strikes, and tap the hard punch and hard kick buttons for more damaging blows. You can also trigger special moves by entering a joystick motion, followed immediately by an attack button. For instance, King's Venom Strike can be performed by pressing down, down-right, right, and any attack button.

Teams

Victory in the King of Fighters tournament is a team effort, and that's never been more true than it is in KOF 2003. Button combinations will let you switch team members in the middle of a fight: push hard punch and light kick together to summon your first team member, and press hard punch and hard kick together to call out your second team member. You can also use a switch attack by pressing down, down-right, and right before pressing one of the button combinations.

Matches

There are no rounds in King of Fighters 2003, it's just one big brawl split among your three team members. Each member of the team is given a limited supply of energy, shown on the top of the screen as a yellow line. When one team member gets rocked and socked with attacks, they lose health, and if they lose it all, they're knocked out! If you knock out all three of your opponents, you can advance to the next fight. If not, just press the one player start button to restart that fight.

Tip: Excellent Service

There's no shame in using the continue service if you've lost a fight. Be sure to pick 1/3rd Opponent's Life if you've hit a roadblock and just want to make progress. This is especially handy against the rock-hard final boss Mukai.

Tip: Show Him Who's Boss!

A sinister, super-powered version of Kyo named Kusanagi appears as a mid-boss about halfway through the game. He won't be easy to beat, but you'll be rewarded handsomely if you go beyond the call of duty and bring him down with one of your best attacks!

Tip: Born Leader

Being a team leader has its benefits! Only your team's captain can perform EX super moves, which pack double the damage of ordinary super moves. Unfortunately, they also require two stocks of energy from your super meter.
