Controls
Control The Last Express with your mouse. Just move the cursor around the screen and note how the arrow changes. Where it points indicates where you'll go when you left click. Left clicking when it changes to another icon -- like a speech bubble -- initiates that action. Click the button in the lower right to access the game's main menu, and the button at the upper left to open Robert's inventory. The controls are very straightforward once you're used to the movement.
Getting Started
The Last Express is an innovative adventure game in which your objective is to solve a murder aboard the famous Orient Express. Unlike most adventures, which focus on puzzle-solving, this one is much more of a whodunit riddle; you gather clues through observation and talking with people. There are a number of ways to solve the mystery, allowing you to play as you see fit. To begin, click Start a New Game in the opening screen and watch the introductory movie.
Solving the Mystery
Robert is on the train because he's had run-ins with police throughout Europe, and he'll be safer in Istanbul. Moreover, his friend Tyler Whitney, who is a passenger, apparently has something to show him. But when Robert boards the train (illegally), he learns that Tyler has been murdered in his sleeping car. Since Robert is a prime suspect, he decides to solve the mystery of Tyler's murder himself -- but he doesn't realize that the death is just one thread in a web of international intrigue.
Timing
The Last Express takes place in real time. All the characters go about their lives according to their own needs -- going to dinner, sleeping, talking with friends and so forth. Because of this, people and things might not be where you left them. Being in the right place at the right time is crucial to success; the game doesn't wait for you. It's easy to miss an important conversation or clue if you're not careful, so keep track of what's going on, and what time it is.
Passengers
There are about 20 passengers on the train, travelers from all over Europe. Each and every one of them has a distinct personality, along with a set of goals and agendas that may not include helping you. And one of them, presumably, murdered your friend. Talking with passengers, and listening in on their conversations, is one of the most important clue-gathering techniques you'll use. Try to determine who is friends with who and what people's schedules are.
Tip: Check Your Inventory
You have a couple of important items in your inventory when the game starts off. Be sure to look at them, as they hold important clues to the opening scenes.
Tip: Cutscenes
Be advised that in some cases, you can take action during the animated cutscenes. Always watch the mouse cursor to see if you can interact with something.
Tip: History
The fact that this game takes place shortly before the outbreak of World War I isn't just for show. Robert Carth's problems are intimately tied to international politics of the time, so be sure to keep that in mind as you play.
Tip: Conversations
A lot of what you hear on the train is totally irrelevant, and not every conversation contains a clue. But everyone aboard has their own agenda, and it's up to you to speak with them often to see if they can provide insight on your predicament.
Tip: Navigation
At the beginning of the game you'll feel very lost and turned around, but remember you're on a train. There are only so many places to go. Use landmarks like the dining car to help orient you in the hallways.
Tip: Restoring
If you get caught or killed, you have the option to "rewind" time back to an earlier checkpoint. This is also how you save the game. Sometimes going back to the last checkpoint isn't a good idea; if you need to, rewind time even further.
