Goals and Controls
You start out in Tiki’s home zoo, hot on the trail of Sea Lion, who leaves kiwi birds behind here and there as snacks for his friends. Finish each level by freeing one fellow bird from its cage. At the end of each area of New Zealand, you'll face a boss in the form one of Sea Lion's larger friends, who will do everything they can to stop you. Move Tiki around with the direction buttons, using the jump key to leap to higher platforms and the fire button to shoot arrows at enemies.
Enemies
Though you're not harmed by touching most opponents, an enemy's shots or the spiky areas on the walls and ceilings will kill you. Tiki starts with four lives, but earns more by scoring 70,000 points or by collecting periodically appearing letters. Spell EXTEND (in any order) and you'll be awarded another life. Defeated enemies drop fruit that you can pick up to increase your score. Collect the correct combination of fruits and the next enemy you defeat will drop any of a myriad of powerups.
Flying and Swimming
Often you won't be able to reach your goal by running or jumping. You can commandeer biplanes, dirigibles, hot air balloons, even other flying creatures to wing you on ahead. Steer these vehicles with the direction buttons, holding jump to ascend. Some enemies ride in flying vehicles or on flying animals, and if you take out the opponent you can steal its ride. In underwater areas, you want to monitor the oxygen gauge on the left of the screen. Surface for a breath before it runs out.
Secrets
Each level is timed, so don't dawdle. If you haven't freed your friend before the time runs out, a red devil is released to pursue Tiki. This devil is fast and very mean, and is joined by reinforcements if you stall even longer, so act fast. If you're brave and timely, a more thorough exploration can reveal special powerups, hidden levels and other secrets.
Tip: Enemies
Most enemies won't hurt you if you touch them, so you can just walk right by them if you want to. Since each level is timed, you don't want to get bogged down in combat unless you're facing a dangerous foe or are looking for powerups.
Tip: Powerups
There are nearly 30 powerups to collect, and each benefits a different play style. Experiment with all of them until you find the ones you like best, then watch how the combinations of fruit you collect affects the type of powerups enemies drop.
Tip: Vehicles
There are also ten vehicles Tiki can use to move from place to place; most must be stolen from enemies. Normally you ascend by holding the jump button, and the vehicle slowly drifts downward when you release. If you grab the joystick-shaped power up, though, you can steer using only the direction keys.
Tip: Map
You're provided a small map to go with each level. Remember that your objective -- your captured friend -- may be above or below you, so refer to the map when you're stuck.
Tip: Bosses
Every four levels or so, you'll encounter a boss monster. Defeating each of these bosses requires a special pattern or technique; this pink whale, for example cannot be harmed from the outside, so you'll need to let him swallow you and shoot arrows at his soft innards.
