Basics

Time Pilot is a top-down aerial shooter that was popular in the early eighties, during the height of the arcade's golden age. Your job is to pilot your sleek time-traveling fighter jet through five eras, battling enemy squadrons and shooting down their motherships. Earn extra points by grabbing passing parachutists -- time pilots like you who need a rescue. Time Pilot was the inspiration for many later games, including classics such as 1942. Now get in the cockpit and start shooting, ace!

Controls

Your plane remains more or less in the center of the screen at all times -- the direction keys actually move the sky rather than the plane, which can take some getting used to but was a lot easier on 1982's technology. The fire button will launch unlimited shells at the enemy fighters that swarm you. One hit is usually all you need to destroy an enemy ship, but soon they start coming in really fast. Watch out for enemy fire, as even a single hit will destroy your craft and cost you a life.

Eras

You must travel through five different time periods, battling enemy aircraft from the era. You start out in 1910, doing battle with old WWI biplanes and zeppelins, but soon you'll be moving forward through history. Knock out 56 small planes in each era and you'll have the chance to face an enemy mothership -- a huge flying fortress bristling with guns. Only by defeating the mothership can you move forward to the next time period. Each era is more challenging than the last, so good luck!

Tip: Squadrons

Try to blast whole squadrons at once to earn major bonus points. The arrival of an enemy squadron is announced by the sound of air raid sirens. As in Galaxian, it's easiest to knock them down when they're all arranged information.

Tip: Parachutists

Scoop up the parachutists when you seen them float by. These guys are fellow time pilots who had to ditch their craft, and they need rescue. Also remember: you're supposed to shoot the bad guys, not your coworkers. Watch your aim!

Tip: Motherships

You have to deliver seven direct hits to a mothership before it will go down. Despite their size, this is easier said than done.

Tip: Dodging Missiles

Some of your enemies fire missiles with rudimentary homing systems. Try to master the art of quick turns and sudden changes in direction -- it's the best way to get these things off your tail.
