Basics

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon is a team-based tactical shooter that places you in command of the Ghosts, the best of America's special forces. Ghosts go where SEALs and Rangers fear to tread. It's 2008, and hard-line nationalists have taken over the former Soviet Union, initiating brutal military assaults on neighboring countries in an attempt to pull down a new Iron Curtain. It's up to you and your team to stabilize territories that have become some of the deadliest in the world.

Gameplay

Whereas Ghost Recon's cousin, the Rainbow Six series, includes a huge amount of preplanning, in this game you give orders on the ground in real time. You control one soldier at a time in the field, giving orders to the others. You can also switch perspectives to control whoever you want at any time. Before each tactical scene, you'll receive a mission briefing and whatever intel is available on the situation. Then you choose your squad, equip them and head out to the insertion point.

Training

You'll want to start by selecting Training from the main menu. Ghost Recon plays more or less like any other tactical shooter -- if you're familiar with the SWAT series or Rainbow Six, then Ghost Recon will be familiar territory to you. The training introduces you to the overall gameplay and specifics of the interface before putting you in harm's way out in the field. This game gets really hard really fast, so going through the training is imperative to prepare you for what's coming.

Equipment

It wouldn't be a tactical shooter without a huge array of weapons and military goodies to equip your people with. A big library of weapons, from humble pistols to bullet-spitting assault rifles, is available in Ghost Recon, and all are designed to be as realistic as possible. As with squad planning, you should assign weapons and equipment based on the specifics of the mission: one mission may call for remote sniping, while another needs heavy demolitions backup and serious firepower.

Soldiers

The Ghosts have a variety of specialized troops -- snipers, infantry, engineers and so forth. Picking your team is an important part of the planning process, since mission parameters will dictate the sort of skills you need. Each soldier has a set of stats and attributes that improve over time - as you complete missions, you receive bonus points you can apply to raise your soldiers' stats. Take terrain, objectives and hazards into account to select the optimal team for each mission.

Desert Siege Content

The Desert Siege expansion pack adds eight new story-driven missions to the campaign. A ruthless dictator has risen in the African nation of Ethiopia, and he's launched an invasion of neighboring Eritrea. The Ghosts are called in to bring the situation under control before things get out of hand. Along with the new missions, Desert Siege adds some more weapons and equipment, plus several new gameplay options.

Island Thunder Content

The Island Thunder expansion imagines a fictional emergency in Cuba. Castro has died, leaving a power vacuum at the upper echelons of the island's government. As factions battle for control of the island, the Ghosts are called in to stabilize the situation. Once again the expansion adds some new weapons, equipment and gameplay options to the original Ghost Recon, along with several additional story-based missions.

Tip: Fire Teams

You can create up to three "fire teams" to take into combat, but you're only allowed to bring six men on any given mission. In tight spaces with lots of foes, three teams of two tend to be the way to go. When maximum coverage is needed, two teams of three men are the wise choice.

Tip: Special Characters

Completing optional mission objectives is hard, but it unlocks special characters who often have dramatically higher stats than your normal guys. Special weapons can also be unlocked.

Tip: Switching

Practice switching between different members of your squad. This important skill can mean the difference between life and death -- if your guys come under fire, it's better for you to take control yourself than let the AI handle it.

Tip: Stealth

A lot of Ghost Recon is about...well...recon. If you try to go in guns blazing, you'll get destroyed, so get in the habit of moving your teams forward slowly, checking possible ambush points and being as stealthy as possible.
