Controls

Use the WASD keys to move and the mouse to look around. Press the Spacebar to jump and Ctrl to crouch. Press the [E] key to flip switches, operate machines, and otherwise interact with the environment. There are all sorts of athletic moves you'll need to master, but don't worry, the game will walk you through most of them during the very first level.

Item Puzzles

Just about everywhere Lara needs to go and everything she needs is blocked by a puzzle of some sort. Collect items to use at trigger locations -- a crank to operate a machine, or a key to open a door -- to solve some. Others will require Lara to shove objects in the environment around to hold down pressure plates or set up platforms to jump across. Press the [E] key to grab on, move to drag the object where you want it to be, and press [E] again to let go.

Athletic Puzzles

Sometimes the challenge is simply getting from point A to point B! Thankfully, Lara can jump and climb her way through just about anything: leap up to a ledge and Lara will grab and hang from it. Press the Spacebar to have her pull herself up, if there's space to do that. Otherwise, you can move with the directional controls to shimmy around, press Up and jump to leap up to a higher platform, or press Down and jump to leap off the wall in the opposite direction.

Combat

In her days, Lara's fought just about everything you can imagine: wolves, bears, bats, dinosaurs, maybe even a dragon or two. Aiming is virtually automatic -- whatever foe is nearest where Lara is facing is in her crosshairs. Click the mouse button to shoot it with Lara's equipped weapon. Press the right mouse button to lock onto a target, allowing you to continue moving (and dodging!) without breaking your aim.

Menu

Press [Esc] to bring up the menu. From here you can adjust your display, sound, and control options and save your game. When you save and resume your game, you'll restart at the last Checkpoint you passed -- usually in a corridor between challenges. There's no saving your progress in the middle of a difficult combat or athletic puzzle!

Tip: Ammunition

Lara's trademark double pistols have infinite ammunition, but lack the stopping power you'll get from the heavy weaponry you'll find later. The tradeoff for that increased power is limited use -- you'll have to locate ammunition refills to keep blasting away with that new weapon you found.

Tip: Don't Mean a Thing

If an icon resembling a set of concentric blue circles appears onscreen, that's a grapple point. Jump and press [Q] to throw Lara's grappling hook and swing from that point. You still have control over Lara's movement while swinging, so you can change direction or rock back and forth to increase the swing distance. Press the Spacebar to jump off. Not everything you can grapple onto has a blue icon, though, so throw your hook at any rings, panels, or grates it looks like it might stick to.

Tip: Artifacts

It wouldn't be archaeology if you weren't looking for artifacts and other doodads while you explore. Pick up everything you can find, and you'll be rewarded with new outfits for Lara, director commentary and more!

Tip: Balance

Sometimes Lara won't quite grab that handhold quite right, or might teeter as she lands on that narrow surface. If this happens, a yellow exclamation point icon will appear in the lower-right corner of the screen. Quickly tap the [E] key to regain your balance, or Lara will fall.
