Basics

Representing a "reboot" of a series that some felt had lost its way, TR:Legend returns to the strict tomb raiding roots of its early predecessors. More action, a richer storyline and outstanding levels come together in a game that sees adventurer Lara Croft searching the world for the fragments of a missing sword, even as memories of her mother's death years ago haunt her every step. Sweeping environments, challenging puzzles and white-knuckled action will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Controls

Legend includes a brief training section at the beginning of the first mission. Lara is quite the acrobat, but the control system makes it pretty easy to learn and master her many moves. You can play this game with a mouse and keyboard or, if you prefer, a gamepad; controls work the same either way so it's a matter of preference. Take advantage of the enemy-free waterfall areas where you start to practice jumps and tumbles, and to get a sense of what Lara can and can't do.

Puzzles

Exploration of ancient, forgotten places naturally leads Lara to encounter some interesting booby traps, obstacles and simple locked doors barring her passage. If you find yourself unable to go on, take a look around. You'll find hidden switches, pressure plates, high ledges and other odds and ends that can help you advance. Whether it's a fiendish logic puzzle to disarm a trap or an acrobatic conundrum to traverse a yawning chasm, you'll usually find clues to the solution nearby.

Combat

Obstacles don't always take the form of puzzles. There are wild animals to deal with, and someone wants to keep Lara from finding all four sword fragments, and you'll find yourself in plenty of firefights. You start with Lara's trademark 9mm pistols; they have endless ammo but more powerful weapons will be necessary as you advance. The game features an auto-targeting system that helps you aim, and some of Lara's acrobatic moves can be used to great effect in combat.

Storyline

TR:Legend is a very story-driven game. From the present storyline of the sword fragments to Lara's memories of her mother's bizarre death, the narrative is what moves the game forward. Lara faces plenty of villains, and plenty of unexpected visitors from her past. But she also has friends in her corner who keep track of objectives and give advice over her wireless headset. The story unfolds as you progress, and it takes a while to solve the mystery, but it's well worth the effort.

Tip: Grappling Line

Lara comes equipped with a magnetic grappling line that she can attach to certain surfaces and use to swing over chasms or climb to inaccessible heights. Always be on the looking for likely spots to grapple!

Tip: Stand Here

Sometimes the solution to a puzzle involves holding a pressure plate down while Lara needs to be someplace else. Since you can't be in two places at once, recruit a nearby crate, stone or other heavy object to serve as your plate weight.

Tip: Paging John Woo

If you can get close enough, Lara can use an enemy's head as a stepping stone to enter an aerial somersault which slows the game and allows you to pull off some really cool bullet-time shooting.

Tip: Grenades

Lara also carries a few grenades (you never know when a girl might need one), and they're especially helpful when you're trying to damage armored foes, or if you need to flush someone out from behind cover. They bounce like superballs, so practice or you'll blow yourself up rather than the enemy.
