Getting Started

When you first begin the game, you'll be given a list of play options. Press the controller up and down to highlight the option you'd like to select, then tap the jump button to lock in your choice. You'll want to start out with the Career Mode before you experiment with the other options, so select that first. At the Career Mode screen, select New Career, then press the controller left and right to choose a skater. Press the jump button when you've found your favorite!

Stages

Now, you'll want to select a stage. You'll only have one choice at the beginning of the game, the California College. However, you'll unlock more stages once you've finished some of the goals in the first stage. Press the jump button to proceed. Once you've arrived at the school, it's time to learn a thing or two about your skateboard! Press left and right on the controller to steer in those directions, and hold down to come to a stop.

Combos

Combos are essential for high scores, and some moves were designed specifically to link your tricks together into a mind-blowing combo! For instance, after you've jumped off a ramp, you can perform a "revert" or twist when you come back down. After you hit the ramp, tap the revert button. The manual comes in handy after a revert. Tap down, then up to ride on two wheels. While you're in a manual, press up and down on the controller to keep your balance.

Controls

Now you're ready for some basic tricks. Hold down the jump button and you'll duck, increasing your speed. Release the button and you'll leap into the air. Now, look for a rail, or the top of a wall or fence will do. Jump for the rail and press the grind button when you're about to land on it. You'll grind the fence, earning extra points. Press the controller left and right to maintain your balance, then tap jump to leap off the rail when you're finished.

Tricks

Ready to bust out the really stylish moves? First, find a ramp, usually found next to tall walls. Hold down the jump button and skate toward the ramp. Once you get to the top, release the jump button. Now, while you're in the air, press the grab button along with any direction on the controller. You can also perform flips by pressing the flip button together with any direction on the controller. Each direction performs a different slick trick!

Goals

Now that you've got the basics down, it's time to finish a few goals. There are over a dozen men and women in each stage, each with their own unique requests. Skate next to a person with a light blue arrow floating over their head, then tap the grind button. Their request will appear on the bottom of the screen. Finish the task in the time you're given, and you'll be awarded with money, stat points, and eventually, the opportunity to skate in exciting new stages!

Unlockables

Although each goal in Tony Hawk 4 has a time limit, the bulk of the game does not. You can't really lose, so feel free to have fun and thoroughly explore your surroundings. However, you can win the game... just complete the goals you're given in each stage. Once you've finished enough goals, new stages will be unlocked. Complete the required number of goals in the final stage, and the game ends with you as the skateboarding champ! Eat your heart out, Tony Hawk!

Tip: Make The Switch!

You can switch stances in a grind by tapping the grab, grind, and flip buttons. You'll earn more points by switching stances while grinding, so never pass up an opportunity to do it!

Tip: The Big O

The best place to grind is on a circular structure, such as a fountain. You'll continue to grind the circle for as long as you can keep your balance. When that becomes too difficult, jump off into a manual for a huge score boost!

Tip: Statistics

Some of the characters in the game will reward you with stat points which will improve your skating abilities. Concentrate on your jump, speed, and ollie stats first; there will be plenty of time later to improve your skills in the other, less crucial areas.
