Getting Started

You'll find several different options in the main menu. Press the controller up and down to highlight an option, then press the jump button to select it. The three play modes in Tony Hawk 3 are Career, Single Session, and Free Skate. Career mode gives you a set of challenges in each stage; once enough challenges are completed, new stages are unlocked. Single Session and Free Skate let you skate without goals, and in latter, without a time limit.

Controls

Before you can finish the game's many challenges, you'll need to learn to skate. Luckily, it's a lot easier to become a skateboarding champ in the world of Tony Hawk than it is in real life. Press the controller left and right to steer your skater in those directions, and press back to put on the brakes. If you want to speed up, hold the jump button down and your character will crouch and pick up speed. Release the jump button and your skater will leap off the ground.

Stages

Once you've selected a play mode, highlight the Play Level option and press the jump button. You'll then be able to select a level. There are nine levels in Tony Hawk 3. However, all but one of them will be locked when you first begin the game. Press the controller left and right to select between the available locations, then press the jump button to confirm your selection. After a preview of the level outlining your goals, the game will begin!

Ground Tricks

You can also perform tricks while you're on the ground. Press down, then up quickly on the controller to pull off a manual. You'll ride on the front two wheels of your skateboard until you jump or fall off the board. To keep your balance during a manual trick, press up and down on the controller to keep the dot in the center of the the balance meter. You can also grind rails by skating toward the rail and pressing the grind button. Press left and right to keep your balance!

Air Tricks

Here's where things get really exciting! First, find a ramp somewhere in the stage -- there are plenty of them, so it shouldn't take long! Next, face toward it and hold down the jump button. When you reach the top of the ramp, let go of the jump button and you'll shoot into the air! Here's where you'll be doing your grab and flip tricks. Press any direction on the controller together with the flip button to perform a flip. Press any direction along with the grab button to grab your board.

Goals

The object of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 is to finish all of the goals in each level. You'll have to break a high score to finish some of these challenges, and you'll be required to collect objects or perform specific tricks to complete other goals. Any challenges you haven't completed will be displayed before the level begins. Pay close attention to this information! Each time you start a level in the career mode, you'll only have two minutes to complete the goals.

Tip: Controller Configuration

Having trouble using a controller or joystick? The configuration process is a little complex: when you load the game, choose "Configure", then "Controls". Select your controller from the list and name a profile for it. You may then calibrate the axes and assign buttons as you like. But you're not done! Once you have saved this profile, you must select it before you play. When you're in the skate shop, go to Options, then Controllers, then choose the controller and profile you want to use. Whew!

Tip: Combos

Combos are the key to sky-high scores in Tony Hawk 3. Tricks like the manual and revert are the glue that holds your combos together. After you launch off a ramp and do a few flip tricks, hit the revert button once you return to the ground, then quickly do a manual to keep your combo going!

Tip: Switch It Up!

Spinning and switching are both great ways to tack extra points onto your score. Hold left or right on the controller while you're in mid-air to add spin to your grab tricks. Press the switch button before you reach a ramp, and you'll earn more points for any tricks you perform.

Tip: Stat's All, Folks!

Stat points will boost your abilities, but you've got to collect them first! Touch one of the spinning Tony Hawk logos in a level and you'll gain a stat point, which you can use to improve your skater's jumps, speed, and balance.
