Basics

THPS is all about using your skateboard to maximum effect by stringing together wild combinations of killer moves. Every move you make scores you points -- but how many points can you rack up without breaking your chain? Becoming the world's top skater will require practice, skill and a touch of athleticism.

Combos

The trick to successful combos is learning which moves will "flow" into others. You usually have a very brief opportunity to string tricks together, so it's important to get a feel for which maneuvers work together most effectively. You can practice in Free Skate mode, where you're free of pressure and can spend as much time as you like simply getting a feel for the game.

Characters

Before you begin skating, you'll be given a wide variety of skaters, boards and courses to use. Practice to see which combination suits your personal style! Once you begin playing, you'll find that your skater is constantly moving through the course. You can perform basic tricks by pressing the proper buttons to pick up speed, or else try moving along the ramps for extra momentum.

Gameplay Modes

When you're confident in your new skating skills, tackle the Career mode. When playing through the Career, you need to complete specific objectives in order to unlock new levels and characters. And to truly test your abilities, try Contest mode in which you compete with other skaters for the highest possible scores.

Tip: Surface to Air

Street skaters are adept at making huge combos off the ground, while vert skaters like to show off in the air. Choose your character according to your own strengths.

Tip: Experiment

Don't be afraid to try new things -- special maneuvers are usually advanced versions of basic skills adapted to a particular skater's strengths. Once you have a good sense of how your favorite athlete controls, begin experimenting to unlock his or her full potential.

Tip: Controls

Many special moves require specific conditions -- for instance, Tony Hawk's 360 Flip to Mute can only be performed by pressing down, then right and Kick Flip simultaneously. Or to execute Elissa Steamer's Primo Grind, you'll need to be on a ramp before pressing left then left plus Grind together.

Tip: Stages

Although each stage has plenty of rails and half-pipes to play around on, some of your most impressive tricks are likely to happen on the unique bits of scenery, like San Francisco's police cars.

Tip: Special Moves

As you pull off successful tricks, you'll build up your Special meter. Each skater has a series of special moves unique to them which can only be used when the Special meter is full -- it's these special tricks which will help you earn the top scores.
