Towns

Towns small and large dot the Caribbean. How you choose to interact with them is dependent on which kingdom they're allied with, and whether they have anything you want. When you put into port at a town, you can click the buildings to enter them -- buy and sell at the marketplace, do a little gambling at the inn, or visit the regional governor and get a special assignment. Once you're in charge of a powerful convoy, you can even attack and annex towns to create pirate strongholds!

Ship to Ship Combat

The heart of Tortuga is its combat at sea. You always control only a single ship yourself (though there may be many in your convoy), so that keeps the controls simple. As with normal sailing, move by right clicking and fire your cannons with a left click. Different types of cannon shot damage ships differently, damaging crew, sails or hull. Once the enemy crews are decimated, your men can board and slaughter the rest -- then you can loot and capture the ship or send it to Davy Jones' locker.

Missions

The game is broken into scenarios that present you with over-arching goals, like "annex five towns within ten years." Tortuga is an open-world game, so you can go anywhere you want and fulfill objectives however you like. You should check with governors in town for missions, as they may have special contracts for you. You'll also have the opportunity to hunt down famous pirates: in fact, this is the best way to make lots of money quickly. Be careful, though -- they're famous for a reason.

Basics

Tortuga is a real time strategy game similar to Sid Meier's Pirates! and the Port Royale series. As a new privateer allied with one of four nations, the Caribbean is your playground: sail, buy, sell, fight and explore in a world that changes and adapts based on what you do. The focus is on ship to ship combat and bounty hunting, but there's some trading and economics as well. As it's less complex than Port Royale, newbie pirates might prefer to start here to get their feet wet.

Tutorial

The first scenario includes a tutorial that will introduce you to the different screens and menus of Tortuga. This is a mouse-driven game; while at sea, just right click to move your ship to that location. Left clicking on a town or another ship will reveal information about it. Beyond that, the menu bar at the right tracks your possessions, missions, crew and other important factors. The tutorial is pretty hands-off, so click around the screens to get used to the system.

Tip: Provisions

Always make sure you have a reasonable supply of provisions on board. This includes rum -- pirates really can't get through the day without their grog. If you run low on food, or if you buy stuff the boys don't like, morale will suffer.

Tip: That One Looks Like a Bunny

Watch the movement of clouds, both in combat and on the world map. The direction and speed at which they're moving matches that of the wind. As yours is a sailing ship, you'll be faster and more maneuverable if the wind is with you. This is especially important in combat!

Tip: Aye, She Were a Goodly Ship

Once you've racked up some prestige and doubloons, visit the shipyard in one of the towns to see what other types of craft are available. You start with a light, speedy vessel which isn't much in a fight. Also make a point to seize at least some of the ships you defeat in battle, as the larger your convoy, the more danger you can face.

Tip: Heave To!

Towns are not always friendly, and most are well-defended. If you approach a town that's not on good terms with your patron nation, you may receive some warning fire from their cannons.
