Los Toros

The game takes place in the town of Los Toros, Mexico. Feel free to explore the town and pick up an assortment of side jobs between the main "story missions" of the game. The provided mini-map helps you navigate to areas of interest in Los Toros, and distinguishes between side quests and those you must finish to complete the game. Rummage through the town from top to bottom -- you never know what useful things you might find in a dusty Mexican hamlet.

Basics

In Total Overdose, you play Ram Cruz, a thuggish ex-con turned agent for the DEA. Your objective is to track down the lords of one of Mexico's most powerful drug syndicates, and figure out what happened to your father and brother along the way. Of course, that's just window dressing for high-octane gunfights, unlikely acrobatic feats and general bullet-riddled mayhem. This third person action game combines high adrenaline with a crazed sense of humor for one wild south of the border ride.

Controls

Total Overdose plays like most other third person action games, drawing its inspiration from titles like the Max Payne and Grand Theft Auto series. There's very little to learn in the way of controls, which you can customize in the game options. Throughout the early missions, text windows will pop up, describing how to use special moves such as time slow and rewind, plus new ways to off your enemies and destroy the Mexican landscape. Don't expect realism, just lots of action-movie madness.

Missions

Ram is undercover, so as the game progresses you'll slowly gain access to some of Mexico's most powerful drug lords. Gaining their trust will require completing a number of different assignments and dealing with a fairly wacky ensemble of extremely dangerous characters. Take side missions whenever you feel like it to increase prestige or get access to equipment; the storyline's main quests get you closer and closer to your final goal. These are dangerous people, though, so watch your back.

Special Moves

An all-out drug war is brewing south of the border, and Ram's right in the middle of it. Throughout your adventures you'll gain access to weapons of every shaped and size, and as you improve your skills, you'll become more adept at occasionally bizarre (but deeply satisfying) special moves you can employ to shut down your enemies. Total Overdose gleefully borrows cliches from virtually every single action movie ever made, so get used to seeing some old classics in your arsenal.

Tip: Grand Theft Coche

Master the driving controls to open up a whole new world of moves. Not only do cars get you where you're going faster, but you can use them as high-speed rams when you need to knock down people or objects.

Tip: Los Jorobas Grandes

Throughout the game you'll have some boss encounters with various bad apples in the Los Toros underworld. While bosses aren't generally much more difficult to defeat than the legions of regular enemies, they're a good opportunity to use up any saved special moves.

Tip: Movimiento Sazonado!

You get prestige points and admiration from the game when you pull off especially ludicrous combat acrobatics. Go ahead and try it -- it's fun.

Tip: Rebobinado

Never forget that, like the Prince of Persia, Ram has power over time and space. If something goes badly for you, just hit the rewind button (default Tab) and head into the past to try it again. Watch for additional rewind pickups scattered around each mission.
