Basics
For the Race tracks in the United section and for all the tracks in the Nations pack, your goal is straightforward: get from start to finish as fast as possible. There may be jumps, loops, or holes in your way, but your only focus is speed. Keeping with that simplicity, Trackmania has only 3 real controls, the accelerator, the brake, and the steering wheel, all of which are controlled with the arrow keys. If you want to start from the last checkpoint, hit Enter to respawn. If you want to start the track all over from the beginning, hit Backspace. Besides the Race mode, United also includes Platform, Stunts, and Puzzle game modes.
Platform
In the Platform mode, the tracks aren't so much racecourses as obstacle courses, and your goal is to make it to the end of the track in as few respawns as possible. Speed doesn't matter at all on these courses, you only need to survive. When you use Enter to start from the checkpoint, it will be counted against you. You can restart the track over from the beginning as often as you like without penalty, but of course you will then need to do all those tricky jumps again as well.
Stunts
In Stunts mode, you want to rack up as many points as you can by flipping, jumping, or spinning your car. There are no trick buttons to push or input sequences to enter to perform the stunts. All you have to work with is your car and the course, so you will need to be creative when deciding how you want to take the jumps. Be aware that you do have a time limit, often a very short time limit, on these tracks. Your point total starts diminishing rapidly once you are over time, and stunts completed after the buzzer do not count, so keep an eye on the clock and make your way to the finish line quickly.
Puzzle
In Puzzle mode, you build the tracks yourself. The game provides you with the location of the starting line, the finish line, and all the checkpoints in between, plus enough track to lay out a course. Your goal is to make the shortest, fastest track that you can because just building the track isn't enough to win. Once your track is fully laid out, hit the car icon on the left side of the build menu to race your track. As with the Race track, you now have a time to beat. If you decide that you aren't happy with the way your track worked after finishing the race, you can use the modify track button to tinker with it.
Tip: Freewheeling
On some tracks, you will run into freewheeling sections. These look like speed boosts, but instead of the yellow arrows, there are red X's. Once you cross the freewheeling line, your engine is shut off completely until you pass the next checkpoint, and you must coast on your momentum. Be sure that you are going fast enough to make it through the freewheeling section, or you will run out of steam halfway through and have to start over.
Tip: Learn the Cars
Each style of track has a distinct style of car associated with it, and these cars can handle very differently from one to the next, and it is in your best interest to learn how each car works. For example, the desert cars are top heavy, and turning at any real speed can cause stability problems which can lead to loss of time or crashes.
Tip: Follow the Leader
In Trackmania, the difference between victory and defeat is often hundredths of a second, which means that very small errors can add up quickly. Luckily, for the race tracks, the game provides pace cars matching the bronze, silver, and gold times for you to race against and watch. While you won't be able to win purely by matching the gold car, you will be able to get an idea of how to approach tougher elements of the course.
