Getting Started
Press the start button at the title screen to begin the game. Next, press left and right on the controller to select between Story Mode, Character Mode, or Competitive Mode, then press the fire button to confirm your selection. Story Mode is the main game, casting you as the young witch Load Ran. Character Mode lets you choose a hero and compete against the game's other characters. Finally, Competitive Mode pits you against a human opponent in a best of three fight for supremacy!
Movement
If you've chosen the Character Mode or Competitive Mode, press left and right to pick a character, then tap the fire button to lock in your choice. The character you selected will follow the map to their first fight. When the battle begins, your hero will fly in from the left hand side of a split playfield, with your opponent entering the right. Press the controller in any direction to move in that direction, but remember that you are confined to your side of the screen!
Controls
Soon after the battle starts, your side of the screen will be filled with swarms of tiny, colorful creatures called “zako”. Tap the fire button rapidly to destroy the zako with energy blasts. Hold down the fire button, then release it for a more powerful attack. When you're surrounded and all hope seems lost, press the bomb button to drop a screen-clearing explosive. You only get three bombs at the start of each fight, so hold on to them for as long as you can!
Combos
Twinkle Star Sprites is more than just a shooter, it's a competition! When you blast groups of zako, they'll be sent to your opponent's side as meteors. Shooting the leader of a formation of creatures causes a chain reaction that wipes out the entire formation and sends larger meteors to your opponent's side of the screen. You can also use signature attacks on your opponent by taking out multiple zako with a single charged shot.
Lives
You get three lives at the beginning of the game, with each life receiving five hearts. You'll lose a heart if you crash into a zako, and a whopping three hearts are lost if you're hit with a meteor, your opponent's signature attack, or the dreaded boss. When all hearts are lost and you're hit with anything but a zako, you'll lose a life. If you've lost all your lives, just press the start button before time expires to continue the game.
Tip: Dazed And Confused
None of the zako can kill you, but they will leave you dazed and unable to move for a short period of time. Rapidly tap the fire button and wiggle the joystick to return to your senses before you're hit with something more dangerous!
Tip: Keep The Change
Some formations of zako carry a gold coin with a dollar sign on one side, and a bomb on the other. Catch the coin when the bomb appears to stock up on one of those life-saving explosives!
Tip: Catch The Fever
Some formations of zako have a blue moon crystal trailing behind them. Zap all the zako in the formation and you'll enter “fever” mode, boosting the power of your attacks!
Tip: Bring On The Boss!
The better you play, the more your charge meter (shown at the bottom of the screen) will grow. Once it's grown to its maximum size, hold down the fire button and release it after the meter starts flashing. You'll drop an especially powerful boss on your opponent's side of the screen!
Tip: Bubble Trouble
The zako sealed in bubbles are more resistant to damage than those without them. Pop the bubbles around the zako before you blast the leader of the formation, or the chain reaction won't destroy them all.
