Controls
When you start one of the game modes, you'll be asked to select a stage. Press the left and right arrows to highlight one of the six stages, then type Enter. You'll be taken to that location, and after a brief cut scene, will be swarmed by vicious zombies! Each of these rotting creeps will have a text window hovering above them. Type the words shown in the window exactly as you see them to blow away each zombie before it can reach you.
Getting Started
Type the Enter key at the title screen and you'll be taken to the main menu. Press the up and down arrow keys to select one of the available options, then type Enter to confirm your choice. Choose the Arcade Mode to play a straight conversion of the arcade game, or Original Mode for an expanded game that rewards you for top performance. You can also sharpen your skills with the Practice Mode, or push yourself to the limit with an intense Drill.
Powerups
As you advance through the stage, you'll find hidden items. Quickly type the letter shown above the item to claim it as your own! Items range from the Dictionary, which limits the words shown to a single category, to the Tranquilizer, which makes the zombies less dangerous. You can also earn items with typing accuracy. When the green bar in the top left hand corner of the screen is full, press F1, F2, F3, or F4 to select an item.
Lives
You start the game with three life lamps, displayed at the bottom of the screen. If you're slow to type and a zombie attacks you, one of these lamps will be snuffed out. Once you lose them all, you'll fall prey to the army of the undead! If you have credits left, press the Enter button to resume your progress from the point where you died. Once you're out of both lamps and credits, the game will come to a grim conclusion.
Tip: No Shift
If you haven't quite mastered the shift key, there's good news. You don't have to capitalize any of the words you'll type, giving you a distinct advantage against the zombies.
Tip: The Right Type
While playing Typing of the Dead, it's important to listen to what your typing teacher always told you in high school. Type with rhythm, keep your hands in the home row, and keep your eyes off the keyboard!
Tip: Original Mode
If you're having trouble with the Arcade Mode, play the Original Mode for a while. You'll earn tokens which can be used to unlock features such as extra life lamps and credits.
Tip: Quitting the Game
Zombies have taken over the game’s menu, and players are unable to quit without knowing the secret code! To quit The Typing of the Dead, simply hold [Alt] and press [F4].
