Unreal Tournament Basics
The goal of the Unreal Tournament is very simple: kill or be killed. More accurately, it's kill more than other people kill. Most of the Tournament is deathmatch style, in which you and several other players (or AI bots) are placed in a small arena, and you kill everything you see. You begin with just a pistol, but you can find other weapons, ammo, health, and armor scattered throughout the arena. Use whatever weapons you can find to shoot, cut, or blow up anyone else in your way.
Game Modes
When you begin UT, you will have the option of beginning a tournament, which will start the single player mode, or the multiplayer mode. In single player, you will begin with deathmatches against the AI bots. As you move up the ladder, the bots will get more skilled and the battles more difficult. After winning 3 matches, you also unlock another game mode. The other modes include domination, where your team holds control points, capture the flag, and assault, where your team must attack or defend a base.
Weapons
There is a wide variety of weapons available to you in UT. Some, like the Enforcer, Minigun, and Sniper Rifle, are straightforward. Others are a little more unconventional. The biorifle fires blobs of green goo on the floor that will explode when your enemies come near them. The ripper fires spinning razor projectiles that will bounce off walls, or you can alternate fire to have them explode on impact. The shock rifle will fire a quick beam of energy in a straight line, or alternate fire to create a slower ball of energy. If you then hit the ball with the beam, the ball will explode and do heavy damage around it.
Unreal Basics
As with Unreal Tournament, Unreal is a fast paced shooter. Unlike the Tournament, Unreal is a more traditional single player FPS. Your ship has crash-landed on a hostile alien world, and you must fight to survive. As with UT, this is generally accomplished by killing anything that moves and finding new, more powerful weapons scattered around. You also may need to occasionally flip switches to activate doors, and you can do so simply by walking up to the switch or button.
Tip: Keep Moving!
A predictable deathmatch player is a dead deathmatch player. Keep moving at all times, and try to zig-zag, jump or otherwise move such that you can't be easily tracked by your enemies.
Tip: Learn the Maps
Once you have played a given map a couple times, do your best to memorize the location of weapon and health spawns, as these will give you a definite leg up on your competition.
