Getting Started
Press the one player start button to begin your first mission, or the two player start button to take turns enjoying Vanguard II with a friend. After being assigned a destruction quota, you'll blast off to the first of many alien defense satellites. Press the controller in any direction to point the Vanguard in that direction, and push the controller in the reverse direction you're headed to briefly stop the ship.
Quota
Your mission in each stage is to meet your destruction quota, then take out the satellite's central core. Each pod you destroy counts toward your destruction quota. Once you've blown up the necessary number of pods, the central core becomes vulnerable... track it down, then feed it a bomb to bring down the entire satellite! You'll be awarded bonus points depending on your performance after the stage ends.
Enemies
As you skim over the defense satellite, you'll encounter two different kinds of enemies. The first are alien ships that dance around the Vanguard in perplexing patterns. Aim the Vanguard at these threats and tap the fire button to blast them out of the sky! You must also deal with the bullet-spitting pods on the top of the defense satellite. Aim your crosshair at them, then tap the bomb button to turn the pods into smoking piles of scrap metal!
Lives
You are given three Vanguard ships at the start of the game. When the Vanguard collides with an enemy aircraft or is hit with a bullet, it explodes and one ship is lost. Lose all of your ships and the game ends. Unlike the original Vanguard, you can't continue from the last stage you reached, so treat every ship like it's your last! You'll win an extra Vanguard ship when your score hits 30,000 points.
Tip: Beyond the Call of Duty
Why settle for filling the quota when you can go beyond it, and earn tons of points in the process? Rather than ending the stage by destroying the central core, keep picking off pods until the swarms of enemy ships become too thick. Then take out the core, and you'll receive a huge point bonus once the stage ends!
Tip: Hey Man, Nice Shot
Aim your crosshairs between two adjacent pods, and you'll destroy them both with a single shot! You can also start a chain reaction of explosions by targetting a large pod. Once it blows up, it'll take several smaller pods with it.
