Getting Started

Press the one player start button to begin, or the two player start button to take turns with a friend. When the game begins, the Vanguard starship will appear in the center of the screen. Press the controller in any direction to move it in that direction. You can also fire in one of four directions by pressing one of the four fire buttons: for instance, pushing the up fire button will fire the cannon on the top of the Vanguard.

Energy

Docking stations marked with the word “Energy” will temporarily protect you from the relentless attacks of the Gond's star ships. Fly into the station while it's glowing and its energy will coarse through the Vanguard's hull, making it temporarily indestructible. Fly into your enemies, their shots, and even the cavern walls, and they'll all be vaporized! Just don't get too reckless, because that boost of power wears off after about five seconds.

Enemies

The Vanguard travels through a series of trecherous caverns on its way to the mysterious alien life form Gond. Along the way, you'll encounter fleets of ships, all trying to defend the Gond. Fire in their direction to destroy them -- one shot is all it takes to turn each foe into space dust! Just remember to avoid their own laser blasts, and don't let them crash into you or force you into the surrounding cavern walls.

Bosses

If you can survive the cavern's snaking paths, you'll eventually come face to face with the Gond. It will try to protect itself with force fields, while blasting you with white-hot laser beams. Sneak a shot between the gaps in the Gond's force field and the creature will be brought to its knees! After you receive a bonus for your accomplishment, you'll be brought to the entrance of a new cavern, where another exciting adventure awaits.

Lives

You begin Vanguard with three lives. A life is lost when you collide with enemy ships, are struck with laser fire, or crash into the sides of the cavern. Once all three lives are lost, the game ends... but all hope is not lost! If you haven't yet reached the Gond, you can return to the last section of the cavern by pressing the one player start button. However, you cannot continue the game after your first confrontation with the Gond.

Tip: Snakes A Lot!

Most of the inhabitants of the cavern are fatal to the touch... but the Kemlus snakes just outside Gond's room are downright cuddly. Touch them and they'll coil around you, earning you over a thousand bonus points!

Tip: Keep It on the Down-Low

The striped section of the cavern has several forked paths. Always choose the bottom path to avoid the most difficult enemies.
