Game Screen
The majority of the screen is the tactical map, where you command your units and get a close-up view of the action. On the top-right is the map of Illuria, giving a bird’s-eye view of each faction’s holdings. At the bottom of the screen is an information bar that allows you to gather information on what you click on in the main screen or issue commands.
Getting Started
There are eight factions at war in each game, all defaulting to human control. Click on each faction to change it from human to computer control: Knight, Baron, Lord, or Warlord, in order of ascending difficulty. Human-controlled factions are played in a “hotseat” game, where all players share a keyboard.
Goals
To win Warlords, you must control every city on the map. At the beginning of the game there are eighty cities, but there may be fewer by the end of the game as military conquest razes a few. Cities under your control are commanded to train troops or create other resources while your heroes scour the land. When you have enough force of arms, you can raid another city and claim it as your own!
City Production
Each turn, after heroes are born, you will then be prompted to choose what each city under your control produces via the bar at the bottom of the screen. Each race has different options, but each unit takes a certain amount of gold and a certain number of turns to train.
Moving Units
After you have assigned each city a unit to produce, you will be able to move your existing units around the map. Simply click on a unit to select it; double-clicking will select all the units as a stack. The cursor will turn into an arrow to indicate that movement is possible. Simply click where you want your troops to go. No stack may have more than eight units in it.
Warfare
Move a stack of your units next to a stack of enemy units or a city and click the sword button in the middle of the screen to issue orders to attack. It may take several turns to arrive at its destination. If a military unit enters a city, it will attempt to claim that city as its own. Neutral cities give up without much of a fight, but other factions will viciously defend their turf.
Heroes
Heroes are mighty warriors or wizards, capable of leading your forces and going on adventures deep into ruins or caves. Heroes are the only units capable of Searching these structures, and may find powerful magical artifacts or allies within! You begin the game with one hero, and it is possible to get more as the game continues.
Tip: Game Menu
Move your mouse cursor to the top of the screen and click to open the game menu, allowing you to save, load, and quit the game; to issue more complex orders like building fortifications; or to view reports on your military might and production. It also has one of the most important commands in the game: the one to end your turn and allow another player to move!
Tip: Tower Defense
Select an army and give it the Build command to have it build a fortification on the spot where it’s standing. These are useful to defend your cities and to stymie enemy forces approaching your territory, but build carefully -- towers are expensive.
