Objectives
X2: The Threat is a complex and rewarding space simulation set in the far future. As Julian Gardna, a "reformed" space pirate, your objective is simply to survive and thrive in the semi-lawless X Universe, a collection of 130 star systems, overseen by six alien races. Any avenue is open to you: be a pirate, mercenary, captain of industry, merchant...pretty much anything you want. But the mysterious Kha'ak aliens threaten the X Universe, and you may find yourself in deeper than you expect.
Basic Strategies
How you choose to play is really up to you, but at the outset you'd be wise to visit a starbase and get a few missions under your belt in order to ingratiate yourself with the government and get the lay of the land. You'll also want to trade in your clunker of a ship as soon as possible, at which point you'll have a few more options. At the beginning of the game, money is your top priority: get as much as you can as safely as you can, because you won't get far in the X Universe if you're broke.
Tutorial
X2 is a complicated game, because the number of things you can do are nearly limitless. As such, it has a steep learning curve and takes a few hours to really master. However, unlike other complex games of this kind, once you have mastered it you'll find a rich, exciting and full-featured space simulator unlike any other you've played. Take the lengthy tutorial to learn the basics of flight, manufacturing and other common activities. Be patient and you won't be disappointed.
Combat
You spend most of your time in X2 in the cockpit of your ship. Space is dangerous, full of pirates, aliens, and those mysterious Kha'ak that are causing so much trouble. The tutorials walk you through the basics of ship to ship combat, and as you progress through the game you'll not only upgrade your own systems, but you'll be able to hire wingmen and ultimately command mighty fleets against your enemies. Early in the game, though, it's best to stay out of the most dangerous regions.
Economy
With 130 star systems, the X Universe has a massive and vibrant economy driven by the laws of supply and demand. The economy is a living thing -- prices change based on local surpluses and shortages. Whether you choose to be a traveling merchant with a hold full of goods or a captain of industry managing your own factory complexes, you'll need to stay on top of economic news in order to maximize your profit and capitalize on local crises. Or you can just take other people's money. That works.
Equipment
X2 has 60 ships available. Buy them, steal them, build them...it's up to you. You can own more than one ship at a time and store them at starbases, then just hop in the one that's most appropriate for whatever you happen to be doing at the time. You can also outfit your ships with a huge collection of weapons, sensors, shields and other gear that'll help you in a fight or improve your profits. Many of these things are priced out of reach initially, but they'll give you a goal to strive for.
Long-Term Strategies
X2's main storyline deals with the Kha'ak and their invasion of the X Universe, but you can ignore it if you choose to. In the long term, you can go legit as a merchant or industrialist, act outside the law as a pirate, or sit on the fence as a mercenary or unscrupulous trader. Whether you decide to build your own factories or command your own pirate fleet, always keep an eye on the news, because the story will continue with or without you, and events may affect your goals.
Tip: Starbases
Starbases act as social and economic hubs, where you can catch up on the news, get new missions and buy ships or equipment. If you're wanted by the law, you may have trouble at some of the more civilized outposts.
Tip: Piracy
Taking other people's stuff has a time-honored history, and it's a good way to make a quick profit with low initial investment. It's dangerous, of course, since many ships travel with escorts, and local law enforcement won't look kindly on you.
Tip: Carriers
Later in the game you'll encounter mighty carriers that disgorge fast attack fighters and torpedo bombers to destroy enemy capital ships. The most powerful can even buy and command these behemoths themselves. Assault one at your own risk.
Tip: Delivery Boy
One of the quickest and easiest ways to build your rep and make some cash is to take delivery missions. It's boring, but it'll help you learn your way around the universe. Just watch out for jobs that take you into dangerous regions.
